We've decided to discontinue our Facebook feed for the foreseeable future – it's just not where our (admittedly small!) audience is, and it's not a great use of our time.

We may come back one day, but it's going to be nothing but these fellas for now around here.

There is absolutely loads going on. But it isn't here. πŸ™‚

Karina Olshanska has joined us to work with 1minus1 on our comms and marketing. She's a fantastic person who is going to add some real benefit to them, bringing new perspectives and some skills that none of the rest of us have. πŸ’ͺ

is one of the most incredible artists working in music today. Unquestionable fact. His music really means something - it’s just outrageously fu***ng brilliant.

I’m working whilst listening to β€˜Unspoken Words’ now and I’m finding it difficult to concentrate it’s so good. Bits keep jumping out and I’m just β€œholy s**t, this is stunning.” If games studios could get music of this quality into their games, they would take their games to another level. It just invokes something almost primal; totally transports.

So, errr, bit effusive l, but nice one, Max.

We're bolstering the 1minus1 team again! We made two new hires on Friday – one developer, and one designer. We're excited for them to join our team – we feel they will bring new perspectives and approaches to the team – they are also extremely talented, and going to be absolute πŸ”₯

But most of all, we felt they would fit into the team brilliantly, because – perhaps even more so than talent, has to win.

We can't wait to introduce them.

The creative work we are doing in the studio is so exciting right now. We can't wait to share!

And we are doing it all REMOTE. πŸ˜ƒ

Lots of challenges of course (part of the fun!), but the creative work we are doing for games studios and games is definitely the best we have ever done. πŸ”₯

May the battle begin!

3D animation. We love this sh*t πŸ™‚

In the last 12 months, we’ve been doing a lot more animation and immersive experience work. This animation work was created for from their characters – taking them from initial static models, rigging, and then into full on battle to demonstrate that aspect of their game.

The characters, environments and animations were created and animated in Blender, which was the perfect software for what we needed.

Next task is to bring these characters into their website! πŸ’ͺ

SHOW, DON'T TELL. Because it's a candidate's market out there right now in the games industry. And anything less ... is at best a missed opportunity. πŸ™‚

Everyone says they're different. And everyone offers great job perks. So if that's the case (and yep – it is), what can studios do to differentiate themselves? To go further than simply relying on the strength of their games to carry candidates through the door?

Games Studios need to lean into their culture. *Not the level of culture that says "We play foosball at lunchtime"* (as nice as that is!), but the deep working cultures and belief systems a studio has. And as long as you really are looking at your deeper values, they are almost guaranteed to be different. So as long as they are conducive to a good working environment, you have your difference right there.

We all know first impressions are critical. So how does a studio then take that into the candidate's first port of call – a studio's website.

We wrote a little article to break this down and give you some thoughts for a games studio's website.

A STATEMENT ON UKRAINE

The events of the last week have been a horror to watch. It has been stressful to even watch the news. We can only imagine how it must feel to be part of it.

On Sunday, we spoke to someone we work with in Ukraine. They said they "At the moment, I feel unstable". We are discussing with them how we can best help, and will be making a donation to the best possible channel we can to have the most direct place to support the country and its people, in the very small way that we can. Currently, his role is to drive supplies around, supporting local people. We are trying to find a way to donate directly to his local community.

Our hearts and minds are with the Ukrainians in this unjust war, that is – like most wars – simply going to cause pain and heartache to innocent people. We will let you know the details of our donation as soon as we have made it, as we feel where this goes to is an incredibly important decision.

We stand with the entire country of Ukraine and its people.

The Metaverse: Madness, or Genius?

We have a number of blockchain/NFT clients that we are doing a variety of different kinds of work for – marketing, websites, trailers and explainers and more. So the idea of the 'metaverse' is a very topical one for us at 1minus1.

This is only the beginning. It's so early. And yes, it can be a little like the Wild West. But so was (is?) the Internet. And these get better over time ... and so will this new technology and its ideas.

There is something many seem to be missing here. The end 'game' surely has to be an inclusive, never-ending metaverse that allows players/users to traverse between all of these different metaverses. And that's the point that interests us more than anything – there isn't one 'metaverse', and as far as we're aware, no one is building towards the idea of one. And not all of these will survive – in fact, most won't. But the best will, and this concept isn't going away.

We need to work out the best ways to make this new world work.

Anyway, we wrote an article about it. https://buff.ly/3nAq1rg

Mistakes aren't a good thing just because you learn. They can be an even better thing because everyone on a team can learn.

To make this happen it's important to encourage an environment where people are not afraid of making mistakes.

It's not always easy, because there's a natural resistance to sharing our failures as well as our successes – particularly to someone you are reporting into. But it starts with letting a team know that you are making them – and the most natural way to do that is by sharing examples as you make them.

Got to try and break those barriers down!
