This is one of the most challenging questions we get asked.
The travel industry, airlines, cruises, hotels, booking agents have been hit the worst by Covid-19. Though plans are being drawn up globally to kickstart the industry again with various safety & social distancing measures, the reality is that it may be some time before we travel to the same levels of pre-Covid-19 again.

Putting aside if your business can sustain the on-going loss of revenue & focusing purely on marketing, our advice is simple… Build Brand!

How to do this? … glossy pictures & excessiveness just do not fit the sentiments of the current time. Instead, focus more on ‘real stories’ on the human aspects of destinations. Inspiring stories of businesses & people coping with Covid-19 at your destination. Along with efforts made to preserve & restore for when travel opens again. These stories will all have an emotional impact during a time when we are all looking to support one & another… and will be remembered for a long time to come.

Sadly, it seems a real possibility that 1000’s of travel businesses will go bankrupt in the coming months. Out of the ones that survive the strongest brands will win!

Sorry, not Stories… we should say ‘Fleets’ 😊

Twitter is rolling out an Instagram & Snapchat story format, called, Fleets. The story format has become commonplace in most social networks. YouTube, Whatsapp, Spotify have also launched similar 24-hour disappearing posts on their network. And similar to all of the above Twitters Fleets have a very similar look & feel, be it a looking a little bit more simple to fit more in line with the simplistic Twitter format. They will not be as openly promoted, mainly only visible when you go to a specific user's feed.

Twitter is still a great brand platform be it misunderstood sometimes. Its challenge has been the open nature of dialogue & opinion it lends its self to. From which the negativity & ‘call-out’ culture seem to be what gets emphasized the most. It's this that leads many to shy away from the platform. The new Fleets product seems to be a move to combat this with a more private & temporary based posting mechanism.

It’s still too early to examine how brands can leverage this… for now, we await to see how users take to it. Stay tuned 😊

You will be proved wrong!!….. anyone who thinks ‘’TikTok is song & dance numbers only, that influencers lack talent & creative content opportunities are limited, then take a look at this super innovative TikTok promotional content from top TikTok influencer Zach King (). Executed on behalf of the fast-food brand Chipotle, the hashtag created for this campaign clocked over 4 Billion Views

Being a newer platform (and the fact as it morphed from the original lip singing app Musically) TikTok still carries many preconceptions. In reality, daily, new influencers are joining the platform from different genres like Comedy, Fashion, Beauty, Motivation & Sports, who are evolving into a new breed of TikTok centric content creators. Audiences are increasingly expecting something new & different. Brands need to keep this in mind & open themselves up to the possibilities of pushing creative content innovation.

TikTok venturing into augmented reality (AR) Ad formats may be a big blow for Snapchat. The AR effect ads will allow brands to integrate digital imagery into user-generated content. The possibilities for brands here are endless giving them the ability to integrate their product or mascot into existing content.

Whilst, this is a progressive step for TikTok, to expand on their recent ad capabilities, our concern here is more for Snapchat. Snap (their parent company) were first movers in this space, whom themselves have said on average 75% of their users engage with AR content.

We are big fans of Snap, they were early innovators in many areas that have become social media norms now. Take Instagram Stories for example a clear ‘copy-cat’ product which put an immediate halt to Snapchats meteoritic rise. We hope TikTok’s AR product does not have the same impact.

Snap is still an amazing platform with a strong loyal userbase but now they do need something new! A feature, an off-shoot, an innovation that can help them once again directly compete with the big platforms.

Key Insights: Dance ‘hook step’ Ad campaigns are common on TikTok. But integrating the product into these has become more challenging, as users are beginning to show the first signs of ‘over-kill’ fatigue. However, SoftSoap managed to keep this campaign fresh & cleverly integrated the product into the dance step as opposed to making it a ‘forced’ accessory.

Objective: Building brand value & increasing sales during the peak of the Lockdown

Campaign: A 40-second challenge to create dance moves featuring a SoftSoap liquid hand soap ending with TikTokers washing their hands. This was set to a very catchy tune & lyrics describing the challenge.
