Living in a city so rich in history, it’s easy to miss what becomes part of the environment. Looking with a closer eye, you find more beauty and stories.

I often drive past the Portsmouth Museum & Art Gallery 🖼⚓️📜, but the Lion Trail (an art trail involving painted lions) gave us the perfect excuse to step inside.

The museum is full of glimpses of social history and artefacts saved from obscurity. This imposing hand carved screen, with its rich moulded leather, instantly caught my attention. Its navy and gold depictions of fruit are both intricate and full of opulence. What I loved was the juxtaposition of the roses and pomegranates, echoing the story of Persephone and the transitions of the season.

Within the gardens of the museum more carved flowers, this time as part of a stone medallion in honour of Queen Victoria. (VR marks Victoria Regina) The thistles, roses, leeks and shamrock each represent the nation within the United Kingdom.

Even the building with its imposing turrets and brickwork was a reminder that history and beauty are everywhere, not just behind glass.

The allure of a bookshop.

Every time I visit this house I am drawn to this room. I love the light, the view from the window and I adore the desk.

I have come to notice that my environment really shapes my mood. This month I’m feeling particularly ‘stuck’ creatively. It is usually a sign for me to rearrange my workspace and clear the energy.

These small rituals can really help me to refocus and embrace what’s in front of me

Serendipitous to find this book whilst writing last month’s Substack essay.

Not only was it filled with stories of beautiful roses, it has sent me down a whole rabbit hole of discovery. It was a joy to discover local properties I have visited such as Mottisfont and Hinton Ampner National Trust are mentioned and hold importance in the continuation of preserving old rose species.

It does mean that many more gardens have been added to my must visit list, with Sissinghurst and Nymans at the top.

Quarr Abbey - Isle of Wight

Quarr is the calm at the beginning or end of our trips to the Island. Nestled in a quiet spot near the ferry, that still houses Benedictine Monks.

The energy here is so strong, it forces you to slow down, be quiet and soak up the beauty of the surroundings. The Abbey itself is a marvel of brickwork that is reminiscent of Byzantine and Moorish buildings. Inside a cool and calm space for prayer and reflection.

This Abbey is a stark contrast to what you might expect from a Catholic Church, where you might expect opulence and loud religious iconography, Quarr is an example of restraint. As a Catholic, images of the Madonna and Child appear throughout the art I love and the pieces I collect. But Quarr asks you to search for them and when you do find the Madonna tucked above a doorway, or the simple stained glass catching the afternoon light, you feel genuinely rewarded.

It feels almost like a pilgrimage now. Each visit I light a candle, slow down, and let the place do what it always does, remind me that the most beautiful things rarely announce themselves.

Fourteen years ago today, I married my Beloved.

We always hope for sunshine, but the real beauty was found in the wind. Every image from the day captures the wind doing exactly what it wanted, but this is my favourite. Not posed, or directed, just a moment captured.

Real and unrepeatable; which is, I think, the only kind of beauty worth keeping.
