Somehow birthdays seem to get less and less exciting 😅 But at the same time I’m feeling more & more thankful every year - for my family, health, friends, work… And so far I’m definitely enjoying my 40s more than my 30s - slowly getting more time for myself & doing more of what I love (but still enjoying spending time with my family of course 😉).

Today I’ll spend the day having a lovely brunch, possibly do a bit of shopping, then a shoot, and hopefully some cake (& perhaps a glass of w**e) to end the day 😍

And the sun is shining like it seem to be doing every year on this day! 😎

A brand shoot doesn’t have to be a huge production. If you’ve just started a small business, or have one already but don’t have any decent shots of yourself to share online, a mini brand session could be a great way to just get going - no worrying about location, posing or what shoots you get; it’s all taken care of. Then, once you’ve got a small bank of photos you can have a think about doing a custom brand shoot but without rushing it or stressing about it.

What you wear at a shoot is important. And I get that that’s one of the first things people think about when being photographed - it’s something that’s tangible, something you can control.

But, that shouldn’t be where you start. Think about what you actually need to photos for - and once you know that, the decisions you’ll make about things like location, outfits, props will become easier.

Anxiously waiting to hear back about enquiries… I think I’ll always have this feeling 😅

You get a great enquiry; you reply; and then… the wait. Wondering if you wrote too much, too little, if the quote was too high… And is one day too soon to chase? (I know the answer 😅)

Sometimes being ghosted is worse than getting a clear no - at least then you know where you stand 🤷🏼‍♀️

Anyway… back to pretending I’m not checking my inbox. 😉

Founders: when did you last feel like showing up was easy?

We’re Back at Patch Twickenham on Thurs 17th Sept for the next Founders Visibility Lab - this time with therapist Kate Hogan (Kate Hogan ).

I previously photographed Catherine around 18 months ago, and recently saw her again at her home to capture some updated shots. She’d recently cut her hair (quite a bit shorter) and wanted her photos to reflect that. Which makes sense - you’d want your brand photos to be a true visual representation of yourself, right?

Anyway, turned out she has lots of great little areas in her home & we ended up with a great mix of portraits for her. 😊

If you’ve changed your hair / style or have done anything else that means you look quite different from your existing brand photos, a new brand shoot is a great way to get some photos that’s more representative of how you look now.

A good headshot or portrait usually ticks these boxes:

Good light
Good backdrop
Good composition
Friendly expression

But sometimes a photo has all of the above and still feels sort of…flat. Like something’s missing?

I think what’s often missing is the connection. The way the photographer talks to the subject, how they make someone feel relaxed enough to be themselves in front of a camera. It’s like you can almost see it in someone’s eyes if they trust the person taking the photos.

I follow a lot of other photographers, and the ones I keep coming back to aren’t always the most technically perfect ones, but the ones where I can feel the connection in the photo.

And isn’t that what you want from a photo, to feel something when you look at it? 🤷🏼‍♀️
