Early WIP for a short film that may never see the light of day. Spent a lot of time learning new techniques to create environments that feel lived in and have depth to them. When I made The Crossing, I thought I could learn these techniques on the fly but that definitely didn’t happen. This project may never see the light of day but it’s taught me so much.

I’ve just completed my second week of the Mograph Mentor’s Classical Animation Workflow & Techniques with the legendary Henrique Barone

It’s still early days for me but I’m absolutely loving it. It feels so nice to just focus on drawing & motion instead of awkward rigs & overly technical workflows. I made a few mistakes with this but I’m happy with it & can’t wait to start the third week. Also used Timelord by Battle Axe with Animate & Photoshop & it’s a dream.

Who is Jay? Jay Genius is a lovable, highly intelligent, four-year-old black boy from South East London.

He is a 2D animated children’s character who is super funny, and extremely talented. Jay believes that he is a superhero and that his superpower is to help other children become geniuses too. With the help of his pal Rucksy, his rucksack that comes to life and transports him into a magical world of learning. Rucksy flips open his flap located at the top of his head, and springs forth endless learning possibilities full of colours, letters, numbers, shapes, songs and so much more. With Jay leading from the front, they create a magical landscape of early development, interactive learning for pre-schoolers.

I've had to keep this quiet for a while now but I'm so proud to be a part of this project. With the importance of Black History Month, and diversity and inclusion being topical conversations...

I ask you to close your eyes, for just a moment, and imagine a world where an educational, animated children’s programme comes on every day, on mainstream TV, and promotes racial diversity with a black boy as the lead character. The name of this show: Jay Genius.
