How did I start engaging staff at the NHS for the digital transformation project I've been doing?
Enter stage left: Newsletters.
Newsletters might not seem the obvious solution but I decided to send out regular newsletters to the EEAST NHS Trust staff to start including them in decisions, plans, updates and things they would want to know. An electronic patient care record - ePCR Updates microsite was created on SharePoint to support the newsletters.
A two-way conversation began and feedback indicated for the first time in a long time, slowly the staff began to feel included, heard and valued.
We all know that the real chat happens on the group chat, right? Which is exactly where I went next to engage with staff. Facebook, social media chat groups and a multichannel approach made it easy for staff to speak with us. I went where they hung out.
My team and I went out to staff on Microsoft Teams, held live Q&A sessions, streamed live into social media groups, and listened. When Covid-19 restrictions lifted held twenty four in-person events across the Trust.
We adjusted the approach (as needed) for each region.
Staff moved from negative to neutral and neutral people listen. Barriers were broken down and the playing field was levelled, ready for the next stage.
