The today announced the appointment of as their next General Music Director from the 2027/28 season.

He will conduct a minimum of two new productions per season, as well as a number of revivals and concerts with the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra, and the Duisburg Philharmonic.

Of the appointment, Evan said, “The Deutsche Oper am Rhein combines an incredible artistic legacy with a tradition for innovation. I know of no other company whose identity is so bound up with collaboration; collaboration between two major cities, two superb orchestras – the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker and Duisburger Philharmoniker – two opera houses, the Chorus of the DOR, the largest ensemble of soloists in Europe and many more highly skilled craftspeople. I look forward to collaborating with Ina Karr and the entire team and to making music with this remarkable constellation of talent on the Rhein.”

Thomas recently held the position of Artist-in-Residence with the orchestra, which enabled the Hallé to regularly showcase his music, often with him on the podium. That followed a more than 30-year relationship that began when he was appointed Composer-in-Association in 1993, a role he held until 1999. 1996 saw the premiere of his piece These Premises Are Alarmed which was commissioned by the Hallé for the opening of The Bridgewater Hall, the orchestra’s home in Manchester.

Thomas will conduct three concerts during the Hallé’s 2026/27 Manchester season, in programmes which he has curated alongside the orchestra. The concerts include his own works, alongside premieres by Gabriella Smith and Francisco Coll, as well as works by Stravinsky, Elgar, Berg, Chabrier and Gerald Barry. Outside Manchester there are plans for performances in major venues across the UK and internationally.

He has also curated and will perform in a chamber concert in March 2027 as part of the Hallé Chamber Series at Hallé St Peter’s, with further chamber concerts, commissions and recordings planned throughout his tenure.
