We wanted to share some organisations that are creating change and helping to amplify black voices within the design sector.
The UK design industry does not represent the society it serves and across the sector only 13% of employees are people of colour. In architecture it gets even more grim, with 93.7% of employees identifying as white. A report from Bloom UK and media agency UM found that 59% of 300 creatives surveyed do not feel the creative industry is "progressive at all".
Below are a selection of organisations working to diversify the design industry and amplify unheard voices. We implore you to check them out, share their content, follow them and work with them wherever possible:
- Built by Us, led by Danna Walker, is an award-winning innovative social enterprise which exists to actively champion greater diversity and inclusion in the construction sector.
- People of Craft is a growing showcase of creatives of colour and their craft in design, art, and more.
- POCC aims to positively change the experiences of people of colour/culture in advertising and the creative industries and beyond.
- The Other Box is an award-winning diversity and inclusion company, founded by creatives Leyya and Roshni, educating people on bias. The Other Box celebrates people of colour, and people from other underrepresented and marginalised backgrounds.
- Design Can has been set up by a group of industry leaders and activists including Icon magazine editor Priya Khanchandani and designer Yinka Ilori. Its founders aim to push the industry to better represents women, people from BAME backgrounds and people with disabilities.
