Spontaneous trips from Spring - and my ongoing commitment to Screen Free Saturdays! Netherlands in April, Barcelona in May - what will June and July bring?!

And fun fact: I’ve been in Barcelona for 72 hours, and I’ve drafted 102 customer journey maps for my current SEO with Menekse cohort in that time 🤓

It’s been so much fun building systems that do everyone’s homework for them - and this weekend was a good reminder that I can do it and still have down time.

Grateful that every day is better than the last, and for the people in my life who make it so 🥰

fun > functional?

I’ve been writing copy on the internet since 2005 - and most of it until around 2016 was functional rather than fun.

It was copy that was keyword-focused, structured with search-optimised headings, and designed for organic visibility.

It was copy that called a spade a spade.

And as a creative, it’s boring.

Copywriting is many things.

It’s adverts and slogans.
It’s email campaigns & conversion copy.
It’s brochures and catalogues.
It’s landing pages and website content.
It’s blog posts and product descriptions.
It’s proposals and reports.
It’s articles and press releases.

But great copywriting can be summarised simply:

Words that capture the human experience.

Copywriting is changing with generative AI, but it isn’t going away, because ultimately it’s the exercise and activity of communicating with our audiences.

These are some of the things I’ve been thinking about, researching, and working on over the last couple of years:

➡️ How copywriting is changing as an industry
➡️ How can you use AI as a copywriter?
➡️ What are the distinctively human skills for copywriting on the internet?
➡️ How do AI detectors work? And how do you sound like a human?
➡️ How do you create high quality content that doesn’t get flagged by algorithms?
➡️ What does the editing process look like when you’re using AI for copy?

… And later today, I’m talking about all of this and more as part of Copywriting with AI 👀

Big brands spend a *huge* amount of money trying to create a sense of personal connection with their audience.

It has to be manufactured, because a corporation isn't a human being.

Tech companies have created a monopoly that means they haven't needed to worry about this - but then, when faced with new technology disrupting *their* industry, they've found that their customer loyalty is almost non-existent.

This is why Google has suddenly started being silly and goofy in the comments sections of viral videos. They're trying to manufacture a sense of personal connection that fundamentally doesn't exist in their marketing or approach to business.

When you're a small business owner, personal connection is a superpower (sorry for the cheesy descriptor).

You already have a relationship with your customers, you already understand who you're talking to.

So you don't need to worry about using AI in some parts of your workflows - you're a filter between the content you create and your audience, and using AI tools will give you more time to keep engaging with your customers.

More time to be relational, more time to lean into this incredible strength you have that companies like Google would pay huge amounts of money (in my opinion, probably hundreds of millions of dollars) at this point to replicate because it's such a valuable brand asset.

A Year of Content in One Day is happening on Monday - and I'm showing you how I create 572 marketing assets in 8 hours, including...

➡️ 52 Blog Posts - and my process for turning them into podcast episodes
➡️ 52 Emails
➡️ A Welcome Sequence
➡️ 52 YouTube/Facebook Videos with a long-form outline & short-form scripts for each
➡️ 208 Social Media Posts
➡️ 104 TikTok/Reel Scripts
➡️ 104 Community Engagement Posts
.. in EIGHT HOURS! Isn't that the most deliciously efficient thing you've ever heard?

You're not an innovator unless you take responsibility for the impact.

If you're a disruptor, you're not necessarily an innovator. You might just be using a more socially acceptable euphemism for "exploiter and digital conquestor".

"Disruption" is not "innovation" - yet so many tech start-ups get branded as "innovative".

"Disruption" is often taking a business model that worked and paid people fairly, and making it worse for customers and workers but more profitable for the shareholders.

Examples include Uber and Netflix.

How tech companies can have *entirely customer facing* models that have such abhorrently poor customer service while also paying the workers *peanuts* is wild to me - what are you actually spending money on in your business? Oh, right, shareholder profits.

You're just big enough that nobody can do anything about it if you do a rubbish job at a consumer level, because free market capitalism doesn't exist on the internet.

Here we are, in the digital wild west, where all these disruptors and innovators really think they're doing something.

There are certain things that give away AI-generated content (and that now get picked up by Google's SpamBrain algorithm). They include things like...

‼️ Punctuation
➗ Ratio of nouns and adjectives to prepositions
🏗 Sentence structure
.. Among other lots of other factors.

You need to know how to write (and edit!) with that in mind if you want your content to be visible via search engines.

(I'll be talking about this more in The AI Training Academy 😘 and specifically, Copywriting with AI.)

5 ways to use AI in your business that will improve your marketing and save you a whole lot of time 👉🏻

1. Get insights into your ideal customers (so you can make sure your marketing is as relevant to them as possible)

2. Get ideas for content - particularly when it comes to talking about the things your ideal customers want you to be talking about!

3. Content repurposing - but *don’t* put anything into ChatGPT unless you’re happy for it to be in the public domain and train future language models.

4. Get keyword research ideas - so you can optimise your website for customers without getting stuck in a research wormhole for hours or days of your life 😅

5. Creating product pages - including descriptions (especially if you have multiple shops/storefronts and need a unique description for each of them) and sales pages. But use something like Marketing Magic that is designed to replicate your tone of voice so your content doesn’t get flagged by Google’s SpamBrain algorithm!

Marketing Magic is in the top 0.9% of software companies when you rank them by customer feedback 🥹

(... which is the only feedback I care about.)

We’re in the top 28 out of 3,141 companies, with over double the average rating of 2.3 stars.

Software companies need to get it together 🤣
