Earlier this year, we turned West Elm into a DIY photo frame studio 📸✂️

There’s something lovely about taking a photograph you care about and making the frame around it just as personal. Guests spent the evening working with fabric, colour and pattern to create one-of-a-kind frames for their favourite memories, with plenty of chatting and swapping ideas around the table along the way.

A reminder how sometimes the simplest materials make the best excuse to get off our screens, make something with our hands and connect IRL.

One of the biggest things I’ve learnt from 15 years of teaching at places like Shillington and lecturing at universities like Manchester Metropolitan Uni is everyone learns differently.

You can have fifteen people sitting around one table with the same instructions and range of materials, yet no two people approach it in the same way. Some dive straight in and experiment. Others prefer to watch. Some ask lots of questions, others work things out for themselves.

At every Well Crafted workshop we break each process down into simple, manageable steps and provide illustrated how-to guides at every table. Some participants never need them while others like to know they’re there.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about a much bigger question: what should we actually be learning in the first place? So tomorrow evening, we’re taking that question to The Sloane Club in Chelsea.

As AI becomes increasingly capable of writing, designing, problem-solving and creating, what becomes more valuable for us to learn? What remains distinctly human? And could creativity, curiosity and learning through our hands become more important, not less?

The conversation will be hosted by Peter Stojanovic, Editor at HotTopics, with Benedetta, an Oxford researcher exploring technology, society and craft, and Niresh Rajah, Chief Data & AI Officer and Fellow at Imperial College and Oxford University.

We’ll be talking AI, education, creativity and the future of human skills. Tomorrow, Monday 14 September with drinks by Wednesday’s Domaine and GUSBOURNE.

Three nights. Three conversations.

This September, we’re bringing together three evenings exploring some of the questions shaping how we live and work now. All details are in the images and while all fall within the same week as London Design Festival, Better Living By Design: Community, Craft & The Circular Economy is the only panel event part of the official LDF programming; the rest fall within the same week.

It’s part of the launch of Soho as a new London Design Festival design district, set up and moderated by Financial Times writer and founder of The Lab W1, Yasmin Jones–Henry who has been asked to curate the new district this year. This event will focus on how community, craft and circular thinking can help shape the places we live in is going to be incredible. We’re particularly pleased to see Well–Crafted artist Ella Doran joining the conversation, bringing her perspective from decades of working with design, materials and circularity.

The panel will be followed by drinks and networking in collaboration with Well–Crafted, bringing everyone together to continue the conversation.
