Testing legibility at various sizes.

The heavy weight of the P draws the eye to primary read. Stem is light not too overload. ‘a’ and ‘e’ counters filled for legibility at small sizes. ‘m’ given more weight to improve legibility by emphasising end of first syllable. ‘r’ is second heaviest weight to bookend/ balance and hold the eye.

One of many, many roughs. Final mark less playful and no overlapping letterforms for max legibility

Chisel vs round tip weights. The game with a script logo is always trying the balance flair and flow w legibility. Retaining the feeling of the gesture is the biggest challenge.

Refinement and finishing

Softening negative space for a softer, more printed look

Evolution of Visual ID.

2012: reflected my focus on producing the most ‘dialled in’ and refined work I could make. My guiding force was Reynold Stone/ Doyald Young etc.

2026: reflects a looser, freer approach, the broadening of my practice and focus on greater authorship. Guiding principles: perfection is unlovable. Human.

I’m really enjoying working looser and with these acidy bold colours and illustrations for these posters. I’m going in w no real sketch and using as few layers and ‘undos’ as possible.
