Did you know that the Kings Troop Royal Horse Artillery now runs entirely off bio-fuel generated by their own horse manure and bedding? Thanks to an innovative design by Scott Brownrigg.

"Sustainability was the driving feature of the development. We incorporated a ground breaking biomass plant using horse manure and bedding for fuel, as well as solar chimneys for natural stack ventilation of the stables, rainwater harvesting and sustainable urban drainage systems attenuating surface water flows from the site. The development achieved BREEAM “Excellent”.

Stockholm has become a global leader in turning waste into sustainable energy by converting sewage into biogas fuel. The process starts with wastewater treatment, where organic matter from sewage is broken down in large anaerobic digesters. These digesters produce methane-rich biogas, which is then purified to remove carbon dioxide and other impurities. The result is clean, renewable biogas that can power public buses and taxis across the city. This reduces dependence on fossil fuels, lowers greenhouse gas emissions, and creates a circular economy where waste becomes a valuable resource.

Today, most of Stockholm’s public buses run on this biogas, making the city one of the greenest transport hubs in the world. Not only does this system cut carbon emissions, but it also provides an efficient waste management solution while saving money on imported fuels. Stockholm’s model demonstrates how cities can combine innovation, sustainability, and practicality to build cleaner futures.

Norway just launched a damless river turbine that generates power without blocking water

Norwegian engineers have created a breakthrough in hydroelectric design — a river turbine system that generates power without any dams, barriers, or concrete channels. Installed in the Suldalslågen River, the device is fully submerged, suspended in mid-flow like a fishing net, turning kinetic water motion into electricity.

The turbine resembles a floating water mill — but sleek, modern, and built from marine-safe composites. Its internal rotor spins silently with the current, sending power through submerged cables to a floating converter platform.

What’s truly revolutionary is its ecological safety. It allows fish to swim through it unharmed, doesn’t alter the watercourse, and requires no excavation. This means rivers can be used for power without disturbing fragile ecosystems or migration paths.

The unit operates 24/7, even under ice, and requires almost no maintenance. Each turbine can power 10 homes — and hundreds can be linked across rivers without needing dams. It’s a decentralization dream.

Norway hopes this will enable developing nations and remote areas to generate clean power from rivers without expensive infrastructure. Energy, without destruction.

Australia’s Solar Train Is Running on Pure Sunlight — No Fuel, No Wires
