For those following the legal case with Mother, the good news is that we won on all the points at issue in the process hearing last week. The not so good news is that could be another year before the final hearing, as the proposed date is between next October and December 2022. It’s a long battle but we’re confident we’ll ultimately get the right result.

Our powerful campaign to expose these cruel, dangerous and brutalising bouts not only highlighted the problem, it also generated funds and support to help the League bring the ringleaders to justice.

Remember the world before Brexit and Covid? The big political question of 2011 was the alternative vote referendum: a somewhat dry and dusty debate compared to the raw political meat fought over more recently. We used ice cream to make the complicated question of the merits of different voting systems easily understood by all. The campaign looked good, tasted better, and pulled off the difficult trick of making a debate about voting systems go viral on social media. Plus we got to ride in an ice cream van.

Westminster City Council needed an effective way to reduce late-night problems on London’s streets during the run up to Christmas. Many were caused by 18-35 year olds drinking too much and missing the train home. They knew preaching wouldn’t work. Our campaign ‘Some things you only do when you’re drunk’ used humour based on our own experiences instead. It proved so popular that councils across London picked up the campaign, which ultimately appeared on across the capital everywhere from tube trains and mobile phone screens to beermats and washroom posters.

Do you remember our much-loved ‘office romance’ campaign for JLL, the world-leading property services firm? When people think about office property, it’s often cold, empty and untenanted spaces that come to mind, but they come alive when people move in: that’s where the idea which inspired the approach started. It started life as brand-building in the run-up to a JLL-sponsored CBI conference and took off as a major outdoor poster campaign. Years later, ‘office romance’ was still in pride of place in JLL’s head office. The theme that tied it all together was ‘We bring property to life.’ JLL’s focus may has changed over the years since, but the campaign still feels just as fresh today.

Smaller clients have always been important to us and we love giving them the kind of creative expertise normally only affordable for big brands. Connect wanted to get people talking about its new data security product: our short film featuring a vengeful data destroyer was shot by film director Paul Marcus, who had recently produced Emmy Award-winning Silent Witness, and produced by Martyn Auty (‘A Touch Of Frost’, ‘Heidi’), who had a desk in our office at the time. We even bumped into Chris Eubank while filming, who offered to take a cameo role..

Celebrating 25 years of otherness

Given the stature of McKinsey in the world of consulting, it was a privilege when we were asked to lead the creative team developing their new brand, despite the involvement of several much larger agencies. Unusually, they used event promotion and recruitment advertising to reach their peer group, preferring not to be seen to market themselves directly. ‘Beware sharp object’ was part of a campaign initially developed for EMEA markets that proved so popular it was adopted and used in the US and worldwide.
