Found this while going through the millions of screenshots and inspiration pictures I save everywhere — trying to make sense of the endless visual noise constantly living in my head.
I think this photo was taken around the time I had just started a job where, a few months later, they told me they were unhappy because I had a “too wild imagination”.
They kept repeating Dorothy Parker’s quote:
“Creativity is a wild mind and a disciplined eye.”
They meant it in terms of typography, spacing, hierarchy, restraint, attention to detail — all incredibly important aspects of design. And they were right. Rules matter. Discipline matters. Structure matters.
But imagination is also a gift.
At the time, I took those words as proof that I was inexperienced, weak, unskilled. Like my imagination needed to be tamed.
Now I read that quote completely differently.
I think Dorothy Parker probably meant that creativity needs structure, consistency, practice, taste, discipline — not suppression.
You can learn rules.
You can refine your eye.
But a wild imagination is harder to teach.
Looking back, maybe this photo was a sign reminding me not to silence that part of myself, but to protect it.
Not every creative mind belongs inside a corporate cage.
Maybe I wasn’t misplaced.
Maybe I was just misunderstood.
