Midsomer Murders ‘Book of the Dead’ episode


This episode was inspired by the Kit Williams 1980s treasure hunt book ‘Masquerade’. Acme Graphics were commissioned to create a set of 8 book illustrations which emulated the detailed and hyper real style of the original artwork in Masquerade. Some characters were to look like John Culshaw who played Bertrand Jewell, the author of the featured book ‘Seekers’.

Our challenge was to create illustrations where people were in convincing poses, which would later be in the same positions that bodies were discovered. Each was in a different, recognisable setting but surrounded by random objects and animals, representing cryptic clues to where the treasure was buried.

We printed and bound a few copies of the book, which featured as hand props, plus some of the pages were blown up to A0 posters, because one of the characters had done so to hopefully reveal tiny, hidden clues.

Creating a net to match the required dimensions, making the handles and applying the new Deliveroo teal logo using a printed and machine cut vinyl application! Keep an eye out on the next Deliveroo advert 👀

Apparently Warner Brothers are planning to remake the original 1937 Harry Potter film ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Spells’…..about time!

Acme provided graphics for the 2024 Waitrose Christmas TV advert.

During a family Christmas Day gathering, a dessert goes missing and the kitchen fridge becomes a ‘crime scene’, resulting in a detective mystery parody piece.

We designed and printed a hero detective crime book cover, which was requested to have a 1950s Hitchcock look, we also supplied bespoke rolls of festive ‘crime’ tape, and re-designed the existing Waitrose ‘Red Velvet Bauble Dessert’ packaging box, simplifying the layout and making the cellophane window larger, to reveal more of the product, and increasing the key typography to be more easily readable in the close up pack shot.

The talented, ‘A list’ cast of actors carried off the concept with aplomb, resulting in an unusual and quirky Christmas campaign. There is a second instalment in the pipeline, where we suspect the dessert stealing culprit will be revealed, to much festive amusement.

Acme are experts at designing and making convincing period props and dressing prints. We have just updated our 1970s decade library with new posters and printed ephemera.

All of the designs are fully researched and compiled to be appropriate to the seventies, and will look totally in place and help to enhance the look of scenes set in that decade.
