Pakistan’s Strategic Move
New Airports in Mirpur, D.I. Khan, and Hyderabad
Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has unveiled a major initiative to build new airports in Mirpur (AJK), Dera Ismail Khan (KP), and Hyderabad (Sindh) alongside an upgrade of Sukkur Airport to enhance regional and international connectivity .
The feasibility study for the proposed Mirpur International Airport is in its final stages, with the precise site location expected to be announced soon. This strategic development is primarily driven by the growing demand from the UK-based Kashmiri diaspora, who have long advocated for improved direct air connectivity to their region of origin. The proposed airport aims to significantly reduce travel time and enhance convenience for the overseas community, while also contributing to regional economic growth and accessibility.
This latest wave of airport projects reflects a bold shift in Pakistan’s infrastructure strategy seeking to democratize air travel access, energize regional economies, and leverage the global diaspora. As feasibility studies conclude and construction begins, these airports promise to reshape domestic connectivity and international outreach.
