🎥 What does The NEET Agent actually do?

At the Woodhill Primary School community event in Woolwich, I had the opportunity to speak with Cllr Anthony Okereke, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, about The NEET Agent and the work I’ve been building locally.

He asked me two simple questions:

👉 What does The NEET Agent do?
👉 What advice would I give to young people?

For me, it starts with passion.

Instead of only telling people to search online, send another CV and hope somebody replies, The NEET Agent starts with a conversation:

What do you actually want to do, try or learn?

Then we take that information into the local community, speak to businesses and organisations, uncover opportunities and help connect potential with professionals.

Sometimes an opportunity can start with a two-minute conversation.

I’d keep this focused on the journey rather than promising that someone will definitely get a role. You can confidently say you’ll connect people to relevant opportunities and that employers and DWP (where involved) handle recruitment and checks.

🚧 Hidden Barrier #1 – Franchise Decision Making

Three days into the Royal Borough of Greenwich NEET Agent pilot, we’re learning that Opportunity Mapping isn’t just about finding jobs.

It’s about understanding why opportunities don’t always reach local people.

Today we discovered one of those barriers.

In many franchise businesses, the local manager isn’t the person who can approve recruitment, work experience or community partnerships.

Those decisions may need to go through an area manager, regional manager or head office.

That’s not a criticism.

It’s valuable insight.

Every barrier we uncover helps us build a better system for connecting local businesses with local people.

The NEET Agent isn’t just mapping opportunities.

We’re mapping the barriers too.

Because once we understand the barriers, we can start working with businesses, councils and government to remove them.

This is exactly why the pilot exists.

🚀 Introducing the NEET Agent – Royal Borough of Greenwich Pilot

Every community is full of opportunities.

The problem is that too many local people don’t know they exist, and too many businesses don’t know where to find the right people.

That’s where the NEET Agent comes in.

A NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) Agent maps opportunities from local businesses and connects them with local community members—especially those who need experience, confidence, or a first step into work.

This pilot begins in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, working alongside local businesses, community organisations, the local authority, and existing government programmes to make opportunities more visible and accessible.

We’re not just helping people find jobs.

We’re helping businesses discover talent, identify support available to them, and create low-barrier, no-experience opportunities that benefit everyone.

This is about ending knowledge poverty, equipment poverty, and the barriers that stop people from reaching their potential.
