Pleased to share that I’ll be speaking at .uca ‘Archive Exposed’ next month at studios.

Billed as an evening bridging the gap between historic activism and modern practice, the finalist projects on display have been developed within a contextual module of UCA’s MA Graphic Design, User Experience & Interface, and Interaction Design programmes. Students were invited to respond creatively to the challenges and possibilities of working with a cultural institution whose mission sits outside the commercial sphere.

Should be a great night. My thanks to Artun Özgüner & David Shaw for inviting me to take part!

The overthrow and capture of Nicolas Maduro, Venezuela’s socialist president by invading US forces under Trump, is an illegal and unprovoked coup. It defies international law, and is potentially destabilising both regionally and globally.

Trump has since stated that the US will “run” Venezuela until a “safe, proper and judicious transition” can be ensured. US oil companies would also “fix” Venezuela’s “broken infrastructure” and “start making money for the country”.

Most concerningly, this could be - and most likely will be - the start of similar actions across Latin America and the Caribbean, driven by resource extraction, exploitation and empire.

Some brilliant pics from last week’s talk . I had an absolute blast. All too often, much of our creative work and dialogue are resigned to online mediums. But it’s evenings like this, where we can get together in person, share ideas and build relationships that truly matter the most. These interactions are foundational to creativity, advocacy and activism.

On that note, it was fantastic to connect with some familiar faces, meet some brilliant people and build new connections. Great evening, with an even better audience – really good meeting so many of you afterwards.

Total honour to share the stage with – you were all amazing, fascinating and generous, I hope to stay connected with you all (maybe even a collaboration or two?). And great connecting with - look forward to talking more.

Big thanks to for inviting me, and being such a great host. I’ll defo be up for another visit soon. Fantastic event photos courtesy of !

Just one week to go for Doing the Work !

More than just a design conference, Doing the Work will be an inspirational day of talks, discussion, and collaboration. Together we’ll celebrate diverse creative voices, confront inequities in design, and co-create a manifesto for a fairer, more inclusive industry.

But after 5 years of discussions, books, podcasts, and black squares, what still needs to happen for the design & creative industry to be truly diverse, equitable & inclusive?

Comment your perspective, ideas and thoughts below, and our brilliant panel might discuss it on the day.

This summer, I developed and facilitated art & design workshops for two secondary schools in South East England, as part of the Inclusive Practices project.

Inclusive Practices is led by , University of Southampton, with support from Freelands Foundation.

Inclusive Practices is a two-year project that aims to diversify the art and design curriculum. To shift the thinking around awareness of race, inclusion and racial literacy within the Art & Design curriculum.

I developed workshops inspired by the project, centred around antiracist learnings and expression for The Petersfield School in Hampshire, and Christ The King College on the Isle of Wight.

My thanks to Lynne, Florence and the team at JHG and Freelands Foundation for inviting me to be a part of the project. My thanks to staff at both The Petersfield School and Christ The King for having me, and perhaps MOST importantly my thanks to the students for such considered and brilliant work.

Today, we celebrate , and 77 years of contribution from the Windrush generation and their descendants. Migrants who helped to rebuild this country, through their labour, their culture, their enterprise and resilience.

But even with all of the welcomed positivity around Windrush, including a reception at Downing St, we should also recognise that many are still seeking justice and compensation due to the Windrush scandal, for which many are calling for a public inquiry.

The detention and removal of Black Brits wrongly accused of being in the UK illegally, and Keir Starmer’s recent ‘Island of Strangers’ rhetoric, shows that this country still has a long way to go in reckoning with it’s racial history – and present.

This week, UK prime minister Keir Starmer introduced a government paper on reducing net migration numbers in Britain.

At a Downing Street press conference, Starmer warned that without a change to migration policy the UK risked becoming “an island of strangers”, a near-echo of words used by Enoch Powell in his infamous 1968 Rivers of Blood speech.

This marks another step by the Labour Party towards the far right, and the affirmation of the racist, classist and xenophobic immigration policies UK governments have pushed for decades.

The aim with of the PMs speech was fear and division. But Starmer, the fascists or the government cannot tell us who we are.

We are not an island of strangers - we are a collection of multifaceted and vibrant communities. We work together, we live together, and we build together.

We are an island of neighbours.

“An Island” by Greg Bunbury, typeset in Empire Windrush.

This is ‘Lost for Words’ - a billboard artwork concept that utilises President Trump’s ‘banned words’.

As Trump seeks to purge the federal government of so-called “woke” initiatives, federal agencies flagged hundreds of words to limit or avoid, according to a compilation of US government documents.

Last month reporters at The New York Times viewed 5,000 pages from various agencies and found these words had been removed from US government websites and publications.

The list of these words has been circulated online, and I found the formatting interesting. The text appeared mostly in lowercase, with the exception of acronyms and terms including ‘Black’.

Each word in the list was punctuated by a bullet point. To highlight the inherent violence in this suppresion, I replaced the bullet points with actual bullets. No edits have been made to the copy in my artwork.

The text has been set in Instrument Serif, the publicly-available typeface adopted by the White House, in the navy from their style guidelines to denote the source of this censorship and suppression.

Rest in Power to Alex Wheatle MBE, novelist, ‘Brixton Bard’, literary advocate and the subject of Steve McQueen’s ‘Alex Wheatle’ in the Small Axe films.

It was while designing the Small Axe box set artwork for , that I got to research Alex’s extraordinary life. This text treatement is taken from the page on his film (slide 3).

Alex’s legacy will live on through his books, activism, and everyone his story has inspired.
