They’ve been at it again! .graham and .bents new print is a supplement to our 2025 edition of Bernard Levin’s On Quoting Shakespeare.

“Having noticed how many more phrases and idioms there were that had not been included in Levin’s 1983 text, we decided to produce our own additional version, following the existing model.”

Assisted by Emma Walshe of Peter Harrington – the antiquarian bookseller who recently exhibited all four of Shakespeare’s original Folios – Nigel Bents has composed a fresh narrative, linking a further 58 examples. And thus, with ‘bated breath’, and ‘wearing our heart on our sleeve’, we present On Quoting Shakespeare Again, after Bernard Levin – a print ‘to put colour in thy cheek’!

2026: studio expansion

We’ve spent January doing the heavy jigsaw puzzle that is moving type cabinets and things are beginning to find their place. The new layout provides extra work surfaces and, with fewer ‘towers of type’, it’s much brighter and easy to move around.

The space is now close to being operational and classes will start again next month – see link in bio for dates.

R.I.P
It is with great sadness that today we heard that Chris Holiday of Modbury Engineering has died. During my early years as a letterpress printer I often had the pleasure of helping him move presses from all kinds of famous studios and college print rooms.
I was amazed at his engineering skills, he moved all my presses at one time or another, He built me a fantastic suction table for my conservation business. Working for him he would often pick me up and getting into his large van we would set off all over the country, I loved the smell of the oil and that kind of smell that only occurs with printing presses. After much chatting away we would arrive on site, assess the situation and start the job. I was basically a carrier lugging all the tools, winches and other paraphernalia up sometimes to upper floors where the presses were situated. It was all so bloody heavy, even his tool box was a struggle. With a deft hand and the the use of winches ,gantries etc the presses would come apart and be transported onto specially built carts. Then delivered down to the van where we pulled out a couple of also very heavy railway tracks. We then winched the presses into the back of the van. We repeated the proceedure in reverse at the destination. It usually was a very long day but immense fun with Chris who seemed to be almost super human in strength. He was a larger that life character, what you would call a lovely man..
I owe him a lot.
