A new survey of 3,100 Turkish professionals living abroad contains findings that challenge the standard brain drain narrative on every side. Key data: • 31% will not return to Turkey • 63% want to contribute to Turkey’s education and culture from abroad • 49% want to act as international business bridges • 60% provided contact details at survey end — they want to stay connected This is not a story of rupture. It is a story of a highly skilled diaspora in circulation — maintaining meaningful ties to Turkey while building professional lives in the UK, Germany, the US and elsewhere. For the Turkish-British community specifically, the British angle adds a layer the survey doesn’t fully capture: the Ankara Agreement years, the Brexit window, the pound–lira collapse, and what it means to have built something in London while never fully leaving Istanbul. TurkishBritish Magazine was founded in 2019 by people who made that journey. We present this analysis as participants, not observers.
