“I want to deconstruct the viewer's gaze on refugees,” says Emeric Lhuisset, named the 15th recipient of the prestigious BJP International Photography Award with his combined series Theater of War and L’Autre Rive. “I am confronting them with the paradox that Kurdish fighters — who were heroised by most Westerners for their fierce fight against ISIS — are considered outcasts and parasites by many of these same people once they have crossed the sea.”

Theater of War/L’Autre Rive will be exhibited in a solo exhibition at TJ Boulting Gallery, London, in 2021. Framed and printed by our partner Beyond Print.

“Making those pictures was a way for me to show what Brazil would “look like” with such a person in power: Beautiful Brazilian landscapes, the joy and recklessness of carnival jeopardised by a political system that threatens the foundations of democracy.”
