What is a cookie, is this still in force or is it being scrapped?
A cookie is a very simple text file on your computer. When you visit a website that uses cookies, a cookie file is saved to your PC, phone or tablet. It stores the website's name, and also a unique ID that represents you as a user. When you accept the consent then a cookie start holding your information like page you have visited, login account details, items you have added in shopping basket, chosen preferences and settings etc.,
If a cookie can identify you via your device, then companies need your consent as per the GDPR law.
These days, with every webpage comes an annoying message about cookies but the UK is now planning to change web cookie requests as part of its post-Brexit plans.
According to ICO.org.uk - The EU GDPR is an EU regulation and it is no longer applies to the UK. If you operate inside the UK, you need to comply with the Data Protection Act 2018 (DPA 2018). The provisions of the EU GDPR have been incorporated directly into UK law as the UK GDPR.
As per UK GDPR, website privacy policies must be updated to reflect that the company is fully aware of the UK-GDPR regulations. Revamping cookie consent pop-ups is part of the various expected reforms.
We hope that as a responsible business owner you understand the post Brexit data protection regulations and go through regular IT security and compliance health checks.
At CHITS UK we are here to help if you are looking for any guidance or updating your website to meet the UK GDPR compliance.
