Is this the most controversial hotel in Slovakia?

Perched above Štrbské Pleso, the Panorama Hotel is one of those buildings you simply cannot ignore. Its futuristic, almost spaceship-like form has made it one of the most distinctive pieces of architecture in the High Tatras – and also a building that has sparked plenty of debate about architecture in this protected landscape.

But there’s a sad part to the story. The building has undergone a rather insensitive reconstruction, and much of what made the original interior/exterior special has been lost. So if you’re visiting purely for the architecture – my advice is to admire it from the outside. Going inside might leave you seriously disappointed.

The exterior is still an incredible piece of Slovak architecture. The interior… not so much.

Pocket architecture – Golden Lane Estate.

Golden Lane Estate was designed by Chamberlin, Powell and Bon and developed between 1952 and 1962, with its carefully planned courtyards, gardens and distinctive blocks paving the way for their later work at the Barbican.

From reality to illustration.

This month’s Formwork Print Club celebrates Golden Lane Estate – from wandering around the real thing, photographing all the little details, to turning it into my own illustration.

One brutalist estate, a ridiculous amount of details, and one print made from it all.

Another little book of pictures from the National Theatre 📖

I love making these little books after visiting a building – just collecting the things I noticed along the way, without trying to make everything look too perfect. The bits of concrete, strange corners, textures, shadows, tiny details and views that made me stop and take a picture.

These photos became one of the starting points for the last month’s Formwork Print Club. It feels nice to keep a little record of what caught my eye before turning those observations into something completely new. 🏛️

Mental Walk around London on a sunny day.

Concrete patterns around Bloomsbury, architectural details I couldn’t walk past without stopping, and then somehow ending up on Oxford Street.

A few hours of walking, looking up, collecting little details and letting my brain be quiet for a while.

I upgraded the quality of my stickers.

They now have a protective top layer that makes them more durable and helps them last longer in harsher environments – because good design deserves to survive a little weather, wear and tear.

This sticker sheet is part of this month’s Formwork Print Club, celebrating Golden Lane Estate – with little details inspired by the architecture and everything I noticed around the estate.

Same designs, just tougher.
