I've just been contacted by the about a timely opportunity for innovators in the UK system.

They’re seeking nominations for the Innovation category in the BBC Food & Farming – focused on work with the potential to make a long-term impact on how we produce, distribute and consume food.

Earlier this year, I helped bring the BBC Food Programme team into the Sustainable Foods event in London, where they recorded a special Future of Food episode with some of the most forward-thinking voices in food innovation. Many of the organisations and projects featured there – from food waste solutions to regenerative supply chains and new approaches to ingredients – would be ideal candidates for this category.

World Humanitarian Day today August 19th, like many UN observances, often passes with little recognition, echoing a wider moral paralysis and global malaise as distressing images of war, famine, and suffering flood our screens daily. The constant exposure to death and destruction in places like Gaza and Ukraine risks desensitising us collectively, making tragedy an almost routine backdrop to everyday life rather than a call to action. This phenomenon reminds me of the posters showing pictures of starving children in Africa on the London Underground in the 1990s: graphic reminders of suffering that, over time, faded into the scenery, ignored by commuters absorbed in their routines.
