World Humanitarian Day today August 19th, like many UN observances, often passes with little recognition, echoing a wider moral paralysis and global malaise as distressing images of war, famine, and suffering flood our screens daily. The constant exposure to death and destruction in places like Gaza and Ukraine risks desensitising us collectively, making tragedy an almost routine backdrop to everyday life rather than a call to action. This phenomenon reminds me of the posters showing pictures of starving children in Africa on the London Underground in the 1990s: graphic reminders of suffering that, over time, faded into the scenery, ignored by commuters absorbed in their routines.
