Thrilled that ‘The Alternatives’ picked up GOLD at the 47th edition of the Awards. Sharing a glimpse of my son’s drawings in my notebook. Unexpectedly the spark behind the covers of the magazine. Later drawn by his hand.

Designed to be read from both sides:
Small things for a better you.
Big things for a better planet. 🙂🙃

Here’s what the judges said:
‘The judges were thoroughly impressed by “The Alternatives”, calling it an ambitious, exciting, and brilliantly conceived piece unlike anything typically seen in magazines, with jaw-dropping surprises and flawless moments throughout. They particularly praised the masterful use of two-color design, the interactive element of turning the book around halfway through as a meaningful thematic choice, and the exceptional attention given to every single page, singling out the “Capitalism is a Planet Killer” spread as a standout.’

Perhaps my favourite part of designing this magazine is building out the lore behind the covers, and how they connect across issues. For this one, the cover shows a man at a desk surrounded by a table of objects. Each object forms part of a larger landscape, referencing stories inside the magazine — stories about fire (the matches), private equity (the cheque), and hand towels (the stained hand).
One of those stories is about an incredible man who turned his home into a homeless shelter.
The clue is subtle: he’s the man sitting at the table, revealed later on the contents page.
Each issue also nods to the previous one in some way.

In volume three, we brought back the dog from the first issue — this time taking the objects from the table, carrying pieces of the cover’s coded landscape back to his dog bed.

Feature 3: Inside VOL3 — Long Read

‘My family and other N***s: My father did terrible things during the second world war, and my other relatives were also unrepentant N***s. But it wasn’t until I was in my late 50s that I started to confront this dark past.
