Have you been camping this summer? Had the legendary 'primus stove' in use for the great British breakfast? They are a stalwart of camping life.

Primus stoves date back to 1892. The stoves soon became first choice for people heading off on mountaineering expeditions. Two primary examples being Roald Amundsen when he became the first person to reach the South Pole in 1911 and Sir Edmund Hillary with Tenzing Norgay reaching the summit of Mount Everest in 1953. Impressive clients!

BakerWilcox were delighted to work with Primus on a campaign. The brief included concept development, detailed artwork and designs for print and online use. The finished campaign material is both impactful and memorable, we hope you agree.

Being asked to work on a corporate brand identity is exciting. It means our designers have the privilege of deciding how that company will be presented in public, in a wide range of visual presentations, and what the subliminal messaging of that branding will say.

Here are our tips for creating an effective corporate brand kit:

1. Understand the brand identity: What is the essence of the brand. What does it stand for and what do they want to tell their target audience.

2. The corporate logo is the foundation of all corporate messaging. It needs to be a visual representation of the brand which quickly communicates a brand personality and is memorable

3. Choose a colour palette that aligns with the brand's personality and resonates with their target audience. Choosing primary, secondary, and accent colours that work well together is important.

4. Select suitable typography to convey the brand's tone and voice. Legibility is as important as style.

5. Establish brand imagery guidelines: Determine the style and types of images that best represent your brand. Decide on factors such as photography or illustration style, subject matter, and composition. Consistency in imagery will help reinforce your brand identity.

6. Branded templates: Our designers provide templates for commonly used materials, such as business cards, letterheads, presentations, zoom backdrops and social media profiles plus posts. Consistent branding across all visual materials will help that brand identity to build and resonate.

7. Brand guidelines (defining factors such as spacing, placement, minimum size etc) help to ensure brand assets are used with optimum consistency and therefore effectiveness. We love to design for new organisations or to re-model an existing brand in need of a refresh.

How do we go about selecting a font for corporate branding?

Some designers love this job, others …not so much. There are SO many fonts to choose from. This font will be used in all your marketing literature, virtual and printed. It is one of the elements in your corporate branding toolkit that sets the tone and communicates your brand personality.

At BakerWilcox our designers approach the task of choosing your brand font strategically:
1. We talk to our client to find out their brand’s values and USP. What qualities do they therefore want to portray?
2. What is the brand personality? We need to choose a font that will evoke the right emotional response. For example, are the company playful or serious, caring, dependable, glamorous, traditional or modern.
3. Versatility We look at whether the font will still have the right impact if it is in a different weight, colour or size. Will it work if used in harmony with another font? When we suggest multiple fonts our designers will examine how well they sit together and whether the overall aesthetic remains solid.
4. Legibility. It seems obvious but not all logos and brand text is legible because sometimes design has taken priority over the practical. We check that your chosen font will be legible if seen on a mobile or projected onto a large screen, printed onto curved packaging etc.

One tip from Kelly - Comic Sans is NEVER the right font!

When we work on a client's corporate branding, we need to get to grips with what they stand for. Who are they? What is important to them? Who are their target audience? In the same vein, we'd like to share something that is important to BakerWilcox and that is to improve our sustainability as individuals and as a company.

Kelly attended a programme run by the Carbon Literacy Project who declared her 'Carbon Literate' at the end. 👏

This excellent project aims to provide “An awareness of the carbon dioxide costs and impacts of everyday activities, and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions, on an individual, community and organisational basis.”

Did you know we are now in Plastics Free July? This initiative encourages us to refuse single use plastics in July. Plastics are made from fossil fuels and their extraction directly generates greenhouse gases. One single-use plastic bag is estimated to be equivalent to 0.86m3 of CO2 Gas. For any questions, please speak to Kelly who would be delighted to discuss more of what she learnt on the Carbon literacy course.
