The oldest restaurant on Seven Sisters Road isn’t some Victorian boozer or a family-run caff.

It’s a McDonald’s. Open since 1976. 👀

Half a century on the same Holloway corner.

In 1922 it opened as the Lyons Angel Café Restaurant — a grand spot that seated 300 and became one of the busiest meeting places in Islington. And in 1935, the story goes, it was here that the decision was made to add The Angel to the British Monopoly board. The one square that isn’t a street — it’s this building. It served as a Co-op Bank for over 40 years, right up until 2024. And now? It’s Zeit für Brot (“Time for Bread”) — a Frankfurt bakery that chose this Angel corner for its very first UK site. 100% organic, everything handmade on the spot, with the bakers working away behind big glass windows at the back. Go for the schnecke (their square take on a cinnamon bun), a cardamom knöpfe, or grab a fresh rye loaf to take home. Open late, too.📍 1 Islington High Street, opposite Angel station. In 2025, Time Out named Blackstock Road the coolest street in London. A century ago it was named after a wooden water bridge. Same road. Different century. Same magnetic pull. A proper snapshot of old Chapel Market.

Before the chain cafés, before the new developments, this was everyday Islington. You can spot Marks & Spencer on the corner, an old J. Sainsbury shop next door, and Zain’s further along the parade.

It’s amazing how much has changed, but also how much of the street’s character has survived.

Do you remember shopping here? What businesses do you miss most from Chapel Market?

Williams was part of a London that’s almost gone. Eel, pie and mash shops were the East and North London working-class canteen — green tiles, marble counters, jellied eels in the window, liquor ladled over pastry. Manze’s, Cooke’s, Kelly’s, Castle’s. Most have closed. The rest are clinging on against rising rents and shifting tastes.Holloway Road has changed a lot since Williams shut its doors. But every so often the older city pushes back through — in a ghost sign, a tiled shopfront, a name nobody quite remembers.
