Recently Nike launched a new innovation engine, their latest foray into blending design and tech to solve problems for athletes, and with it came a range of new products. We couldn't help but recall some other problem-solving tech-led Nike products that have been in the design spotlight recently.

First up is the Triax watch, straight out of the 90's. It's as if your arm was thrown into a futuristic blacksmiths. The melted metal over your wrist made you feel faster, like a kid sprinting back and forth in their new trainers.

Next up are some classic Y2K wraparound sunglasses. They weren't on Oakley's level, but every fashion-forward football fan in the 90's wished they had an excuse to look as iconic as Edgar Davids both on and off the pitch.

Both pieces would be a motherboard away from being classed as wearables were they to be released today. Yet Nike's sunglasses are still a step behind Oakley's design and a mile behind their Meta partnership. Their watch partnership with TomTom, which allowed for tracking via a sensor in a shoe, was eventually abandoned for the NRC app.

With the switch from Nike hardware to Nike software, they swapped tech for community, which is much like switching performance for brand. A great move to enamour the human element and build lasting relationships, but not necessarily one that can overcome the quiet creep of convenience offered by the far reaching tentacles of well-integrated consumer tech.

Beats by Dre went from start up to exit in 5 years, becoming a household name, and were culturally and technologically outstanding to the point of Apple acquiring them. What if Nike pushed further, became more technical, more integrated into human development? Would we be talking about Elliot Hill instead of Elon Musk offering a path to a human-led singularity? What if we could plug into the Nike Matrix and instantly know how to focus like Jordan, swing like Tiger, or even compute like Neo?

We hit the character limit... Read the rest on our website.

Meta weren’t joking when they said they were serious about AI. We’ve watched them assemble a super-squad of AI geniuses. We’ve witnessed the potential of AI campaign solutions. We’re expecting more AI-powered wearable life-insights to come soon. However, the one thing we didn’t expect was an AI country.

Yes, you read that correctly. Meta is in buy-out talks with Guinea-Bissau, a country on the west coast of Africa with great trade access and natural beauty. For an undisclosed figure, Meta will take over the day-to-day running of the country.

Whilst we’re unlikely to see Mark Zuckerberg sitting in a ceremonial throne, the proliferation of Meta through the country’s operations would be inevitable. Umaro Sissoco Embaló, the country’s President recently expelled Portuguese state media recently, raising concerns about the upcoming election, though the handover to Meta may be more relevant.

Embaló has been keen to stamp out corruption with the implementation of CCTV being a key element. Meta’s takeover will elevate this to a new level as all public servants are expected to use Meta wearables whilst on duty. Meta Humanitech glasses will lead the way with the goal of creating a more just society.

GDP growth has been slow due to numerous conflicts, and Guinea-Bissau has the second slowest new business registration time-frame in the world at 33 weeks. An internal (country-wide) version of Instagram is set to bring major reform, allowing businesses to launch and market themselves within weeks.

Education is also set to improve dramatically. Schooling is only compulsory until 13 and child labour common. Access to software and hardware solutions, both communal and at an individual level, will allow education to be continued effortlessly.

The country has an extensive archipelago recognised for its bio-diversity and a history of strong independency in the face of colonial interference and taxation. Perhaps those attributes will stand strong again, whether it’s alongside Meta or against it. The entire world will be watching as a new era in tech influence and collaboration arrives.

We hope that was as interesting to read as it was to write. It’s (mostly) a work of fiction but we imagine something of the sort will happen one day. We’ve seen Elon in the White House, tech integration tests around the world, but the question is, which tech giant will take the next great leap?

You all remember that band D2C and their debut single Heaven is a Snow Slope, right?

Heaven is a snow slope for D2C businesses. A consistent long-term growth partner that moves the needle and allows you to focus on other sides of your business is the holy grail.

Weathering seasonal changes can be difficult for new or disruptive brands if the market is untested. Especially if they're more familiar with marketplaces that allow them to ride some waves by bringing in focused traffic within a more protected environment than the open landscape of D2C.

It's clear skies when testing is segmented and campaigns are malleable, allowing brands to be competitive in a crowded or heavily discounted industry, without having to discount heavily themselves.

This builds long-term value as customers understand there is a limit to discounting and it's necessary to buy at full, or close to full price. It's a long term game, but one worth playing.

Oh, and yes, that 'snow slope' is built from real 2025 Shopify sales data from a D2C client. Beautiful data doesn't have to mean colourful effervescent dots sprinting across your screen. It can also mean a beautiful homage to a Y2K classic.

Instagram have been testing a ‘downvote’ button. Anything similar is always overhyped as the arrival of a dislike button. It’s not an intentional move towards anything negative, rather a way to manage negativity.

As rage-bait and bots (not necessarily separate parties) consume social networks with their ability to draw in naive responses from uninformed parties, the downvote button is a tool designed to drop the visibility of comments.

Is it open to abuse? Probably. However, it does seem to put power in the hands of the people. Adam Mosseri, who heads up Instagram, noted, ‘This gives people a private way to signal that they don’t feel good about that particular comment.’ Downvotes won’t be visible, nor will they show a count.

We think it’s a great test, and hopefully one that can help the platform be more self-regulated, which is the absolute zenith for any platform. https://www.dreamworldstudio.co/?utm_content=sked_6850964eb4600c3e2cd67be2&utm_medium=social&utm_name=sked&utm_source=facebook

Buzzfeed is taking the launch of its social media platform seriously. Seriously and creatively.

Jonah Peretti, CEO of Buzzfeed, is tired of the way social platforms have utilised AI to squeeze creators into building content that ‘manufactures novelty, spins it as ‘unprecedented and unique’, and ‘exaggerate stakes to it urgent and existential.’

As part of a detailed manifestor he continues, ‘When the platforms don't care about content and ask the AI to maximize usage, the content evolves into what I call “SNARF”.
SNARF stands for Stakes/Novelty/Anger/Retention/Fear. Content creators need to please the AI algorithms or they become irrelevant. Millions of creators make SNARF content to stay in the feed and earn a living.’

As part of the campaign Buzzfeed have been seeding SNARF in key locations around the world. The carbonated beverage is designed to mimic the cold, hollow, atmosphere of the social platforms it’s fighting back against. Leaving a bitter, dry tacky after taste, that does everything but satisfy thirst.

Served ice cold, a QR code reveals itself as the can warms up, allowing the user to sign up for what Buzzfeed hopes will be some real satisfaction. Here’s a taste of what Jonah is planning:

We hope that was entertaining. Jonah did write a great manifesto, and Buzzfeed are planning a game-changing social platform, but unfortunately the SNARF drink and campaign is just a figment of our very active imagination… https://www.dreamworldstudio.co/?utm_content=sked_685093a4d886884af5989dee&utm_medium=social&utm_name=sked&utm_source=facebook

Following on from the likes of Shopify Editions, Google released its first ‘collection’ for Spring ‘25. A heavy AI focus was expected and Google delivered.

Integrating AI features seamlessly into existing user journeys has been the focus. Blending value into products with users almost unaware of the shift gives us a glimpse into the proliferation of AI we expect to see over the coming months and years.

If AI is to be a regular part of our lives, we want it to make our lives better. Obviously. Can it help bring us together in ways that the internet was supposed to? In ways that social media hasn’t often been able to?

One small step for man is Google pro-actively guiding users towards a ‘constructive criticism’ mode for all new Google reviews. We tested it out with vociferously negative reviews and it was rather wonderful.

One test review went as follows:

The receptionist was constantly looking at her computer, paperwork, even his own phone. I can’t believe he had the audacity to put a walk away saying it’s time for his lunch. Being late for a flight and then getting treated like this is unacceptable. I would never recommend this hotel!

Google’s ‘constructive criticism’ mode gargled our paragraph for a few seconds and then politely spat out 3 options, from soft to softest:

Soft:
"While I understand receptionists have administrative duties, I felt the focus was too heavily on the computer and paperwork during my check-in. Additionally, I was surprised and concerned when the receptionist took a lunch break during my check-in process, especially given my time constraints with a flight. I appreciate the need for breaks, but perhaps scheduling them could be adjusted to minimize impact during peak check-in/check-out times. I hope this feedback can help improve the guest experience."

Softer:
"During my check-in, I noticed the receptionist seemed quite busy with computer and paperwork. While I recognize these tasks are important, I felt a little overlooked. Furthermore, I was a bit taken aback when the receptionist took a lunch break during my check-in, as I was in a hurry to catch a flight..." https://www.dreamworldstudio.co/?utm_content=sked_68509205c2358fca1066a9d9&utm_medium=social&utm_name=sked&utm_source=facebook

Barclays data from the start of the year shows social media trends driving wellness spending.

Karen Johnson, Head of Retail at Barclays said, “January’s figures are a positive signal that non-essential spending should remain strong in 2025.”

10.7% growth across pharmacy, health, and beauty, is the largest jump in 3 years. Surprisingly only 19% of consumers said they were influenced to make a purchase by social media recently. However, that figure rises significantly to 40% for Gen Z. Perhaps they are simply more aware of themselves being influenced.

41% overall said they have bought in to a wellness trend through both physical products and services. Trending wellness products include supplements and vitamins, with 19% of consumers buying into them, and 12% buying into high protein food.

Karen continues, “Social media is increasingly influencing purchasing decisions – whether it’s a trending beauty product or a must-visit holiday destination. Looking ahead to February, which brings Valentine’s Day and half term for schools, it’s likely we’ll see more of this careful balancing act, with people continuing to seek out deals and discounts to enjoy the good times without breaking the bank.” https://www.dreamworldstudio.co/?utm_content=sked_68508d23d886884af59888d3&utm_medium=social&utm_name=sked&utm_source=facebook

In times of calm and peace, beware, For shadows lurk in hidden lair, With smiling faces, truths they bend, Deceit and lies, their whispered friend. Hypernormalisation sets the stage, With subtle strokes, they turn the page, Indifference grows, the danger near, As freedom fades, consumed by fear. Dictators rise with golden tongue, Their praises sung, their praises sung, The masses lulled in false delight, Oblivious to looming night. We must not yield to their deceit, Stand firm, unbowed, on steady feet, For if we sleep, the cost is high, Our liberty will surely die. So heed this warning, loud and clear, The path to darkness starts right here, Resist the charm, the siren's call, And fight for freedom, one and all.

OmniHuman is an end-to-end multimodality conditioned human video generation framework. In English? It can make some super cool videos based on any input. You can use voice recordings, photos, videos, or a combination of everything to create.

It’s a new AI video production offering from TikTok owners ByteDance and the way people are using it will inspire you, whether it’s to help grow a following, improve conversion rates, or just for fun!

Sophie, a language teacher creates vocabulary cartoons from her lesson scripts. Two minute animations that the students love, with no editing skills required.

Carlos built 50 product demo videos in a weekend and pushed conversion rates from 1.2% to 4.7%.

Travel Influencer Lily uses OmniHuman by feeding it her travel photos and voice notes. It makes her followers feel like they’re coming along with her on an animated adventure.

Of course there is a strong case against the commercial use of AI as those providing its inputs are not being paid for training it. However, the projects above are unlikely to have ever happened with a human creator. The cost of production for each individual would be too high, as well as the time needed to make their ideas come to fruition.

AI, at a minimum, needs to fund human creativity, and there will be negatives, but the positive side is the democratisation of creativity. The ability for everyone to create seamlessly will lead to many positive outcomes for humans.

The UK’s head of counter-terrorism policing, Matt Jukes, recently compared the harm caused by children using social media to the cancer risks caused by smoking.

Jukes explained how smoking was clearly killing people but the government was slow to react and regulate, with decades of supply and advertising going untouched.

He went on to say how strengthening the Online Safety Act to allow the policing of private messages would be valuable. Apple’s recent removal of end-to-end encryption in the UK is one step towards that, however it also raises the general security risk to users.

Data protection is important, but at what expense? Protecting children and the public is important, and perhaps there should be no expense.

With Childwise reporting that children between 7 and 16 spending approximately 3 hours and 48 minutes online every day, the influence of the internet is undoubtable. However, if one source is heavily monitored or closed down, users will quickly (and pretty joyfully) move to another, as we saw when TikTok went down for a day in the US over security fears. Users defied the ban by joining Chinese social channel, RedNote, finding plenty of mutual interests and breaking down cultural barriers.

Protection is important, but regulation of the underlying tech that drives addiction, gets people stuck in echo-chambers, and creates an over-reliance, may be a better way of policing. On the flip-side, will people always be drawn to rage-bait and extreme views, just how they have been drawn to tabloids for decades? Are the altruistic goals of our positive-minded visionaries irrelevant? It’s all up for debate…
