Self-Care is a Virtue
When last did you feed your soul?
Perhaps you take no notice of the roar
Chasing shadows only to neglect the core
Weakens me deep when I lose control

Self-care is a virtue that we must all learn
It is the key to a healthier, more balanced turn
It can come in so many forms, from a much needed rest
To taking time for ourselves and taking a step back from stress

Listen deep and show some mercy on your sanity
Protect your soul, It’s whole it’s your sanctity
Pour you love like no other, take a moment to sit within,
Shower some warm embrace, that’s where it all begins

It's important to remember that we can't give all we have
If we don't take care of ourselves, we won't have the strength to last
So take a moment for yourself, to care for all you do
Self-care is a virtue that everyone should pursue

Have you ever felt like you lost connection with yourself and perhaps wondering if you were in tune with your identity? That was how I felt by the end of the Happen*sta retreat hosted by the lovely Jenny Garrett OBE CInstLM FRSA last weekend. Most of the activities we had took me back to a place where connecting deeply with me was so real and reminded me of where my essence laid.

Amid the ever-turbulent distractions we are surrounded by in life, it’s easy to forget WHO YOU ARE! It is very easy to lose sight of the gem within you while chasing the rolling crushed rocks on your path. It was beyond goal setting for me. THE Happen*sta retreat stirred a need to RESET my intentions to allow me a new flow of experiences that will engage my power, purpose and pursuits and charged me optimally to keep BEing in my truth to illuminate my path…

A glorious thank you to Andréa Watts who taught me a new way to tell my story and to Jackie, for taking me to where I am most at HOME.
And I will not forget this ...

I was having a go at myself about an interview I had done years ago and how I didn’t do very well at the interview, and with that came a surge of what I could have done better and how I understood, that with time, we can learn and improve our skills. That reflection put so many things together for me and made me feel less angry than I was when the thoughts of the event initially popped up in my head.
Taking time to think about our experiences and connecting the dots between them can help you acquire insight into yourself and your environment. This can happen organically when you look back on a situation and ponder on what you could have done differently or what you gained from it. Active self-reflection helps you learn from your experiences and enables you to control and manage future similar occurrences. Cultivating self-reflection as a skill means actively dedicating time to reflect, which can help you gain an even deeper understanding about you and the situations in your personal and professional life.
When you can practice active self-reflection and hone the skill through consistent effort and use, here are five benefits you can get from it.

Growth – Active self-reflection can help achieve personal and professional growth, as it allows you to carry out an extensive inner thought process, which will give you a better understanding of your strengths and weaknesses, helping you learn from your experiences.

Better self-awareness - Reflection allows you to identify and appreciate your experiences and gain clearer insight into who you are and what drives your actions. With this, you can identify ways that you can improve yourself, where needed.

Creativity - When you practice active reflection, it will allow you to discover new ways of doing things and help you promote innovation.

Problem solving – When you reflect on things past, you will see the picture clearer and be able to connect the dots as to how it could have been better. This will allow you an understanding of how to better manage similar occurrences in the future.

Confidence - Active reflection allows you to identify and overcome barriers in your way by helping you analyse the way you think.

How to deliver negative news in empowering ways

There are times when breaking the bad news, having those very difficult conversations, or telling your team members things that may get them disappointed, will become inevitable. Whether the negative news is connected to a phase of organisational change, affecting several people within the organisation or just a communication for an individual, owing to their particular circumstance, delivering negative messages is never an easy task. You may find yourself as a senior manager between the rock and hard place, not knowing exactly where to stand but the job must be

To make it easier for you, here are a few things you can do to ensure that you communicate messages that may seem negative in empowering and effective ways – be it informing someone they're not getting the promotion they had hoped for, or that they may be laid off soon or their position is no longer required or anything in between.

Here are five things to help you deliver bad news in an empowering way:

Have your facts and figures - ensure that you know what you're talking about and you have all of the facts and figures leading to the decision. Show whoever you're giving that you are clear on the situation. Be well equipped to answer all the questions they may have for you.

Prepare yourself emotionally - prepare yourself emotionally so that you do not slip through yourself and do not allow your body language to betray you. Be attuned to the message you are and ensure to stick to the core of your message. Avoid irrelevant comments or making false promises or raising hopes sufficient assurance that you can fulfil what you have said.

Be direct and show that the decision is justified - do not mince your words nor sugar coat them. Be direct and clear in your delivery and avoid ambiguities. However, if needed, show some empathy, be respectful and break the news with dignity.

Work out options for growth or improvement with them - if this is applicable, show the individual that you care about them and work out options for the future with them.

Lastly, wish them well for the future.
