We wanted to step away from work related posts for a moment to share some news from the boys football team we have been sponsoring this season, Trafford FC Youth Warriors U15. Appreciate there is often discussions as to what should and shouldn’t go on LinkedIn, but this is most definitely worth a mention.
One of the Trafford Warriors players, Callen, lost his dad whilst he was serving with the EPS (Edmonton Police Service) in Canada. Constable Daniel Woodall was fatally injured at the age of 35 on June 8th 2015, whilst doing the job he loved.
As it is nearing the 10th anniversary of Dan’s passing, members of the EPS have travelled to the North West for their annual charity game (the ‘Woodall Cup’) at Darwen FC to honour their former colleague. Dan grew up in Darwen and had worked for Greater Manchester Police before emigrating to Canada.
As part of their visit the EPS spent the evening with our Trafford Warriors for a friendly match in honour of Dan and with Dan’s son Callen on the pitch. Some excellent football skills on show from both teams and this (and the subsequent Woodall Cup match) was and is a fantastic way to honour Dan. The EPS lads were great with the Warrior boys and displayed a solid example of team spirit and unity. With a penalty shoot out after the match, the boys were given gifts to commemorate the occasion and we wish the EPS all the very best for the Woodall Cup!
This reminds us all of the risks some are prepared to take and the sacrifices they are prepared to make, simply whilst doing a job they love and, in this case, whilst looking to protect the community around them. It certainly puts things into perspective when we think about some of the more mundane things that worry us at work on a daily basis.
This year the Woodall Cup is being held at Darwen FC tonight at 7pm. The charity match will feature former professional players against the EPS’s best XI. It will be free to enter, but supporters can make a donation. Amongst other former professional players will be stars such as former Blackpool striker Brett Ormerod, former Newcastle United player Chris Holland, and former Barnsley and Premier League player Darren Sheridan. If you live in the area it would be great if you could make it. Both Dan’s sons who will be there for their dad. Thinking of Dan's family & friends. Go EPS!
