We're thrilled to announce the publication of Coastal Guide 2021!
Last year's lockdown meant we could publish online only, but for 2021 it's back in ink-on-paper form and looking better than ever! We're looking forward to getting out and about over the weekend as we distribute copies in person... but if you can't wait until then to get your hands on a copy, you can read it at www.thecoastalguide.co.uk

Inspiration is all around… and who else but Mother Nature could have come up with something so vibrant and beautiful? Cercis canadensis ‘Forest Pansy’ is full of heart-shaped leaves in summer but it’s later in the year that the real magic begins – the autumn colours really are a sight to behold! Leaves collected, quite literally, from our doorstep were used for an on-the-spot photoshoot; the final image formed part of a suite of wedding stationery.

We’ve seen Maggi Hambling’s gorgeous scallop sculpture from all sides now… up-close on a seaside walk, and as a shape on the water’s edge when we sail the Suffolk coastline. Whichever way you look at it, it’s a thing of beauty!

Watching, waiting… wondering. Although we’re based on the East Coast we love to explore other parts of the UK and beyond, though water never seems to be too far off our chosen route. Anthony Gormley’s ‘iron men’ on Crosby Beach in Merseyside make quite an impact; 100 of these life-size figures were spread along 3km of the foreshore for the artist’s Another Place installation. When we visited some had been ‘dressed’ and ‘accessorised’, and we hear that others have since been uprooted, cleaned up and returned to their rightful place. We rather like the idea of them ageing gracefully as the years, winds and tides take their toll… what do you think?

Barking mad! The Jerma Palace used to be one of Malta’s premier hotels – constructed by the Libyan Foreign Investment Company, the ex-leader of Libya  Mummer Gaddafi had his own presidential suite there. Closed down in 2007 it’s now derelict, the interior stripped of everything of value. Some call it an eyesore, but we’ve spent many hours there admiring the awesome artwork that its walls now display… a collection of cute, quirky, political, attention-grabbing and sometimes disturbing depictions amid the rubble and ruin. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, right?

What’s black and white and red all over? These red penguins – created by Belgian artist William Sweetlove, they look down from a 14m high wooden frame in Zeeland’s coastal resort of Breskens! The nearby harbour offered us sanctuary at the end of a sailing adventure around the Netherlands and, later, a local restaurant (Zeeland has more of them with Michelin stars than any other Dutch province!) introduced us to one of the loveliest gins we’ve ever tasted. Stupidly, we didn’t source a bottle to bring home…

It might well be the early bird that catches the worm… but East Coast night owls often enjoy a beautiful sunset! The region’s rivers and estuaries serve up sights like this all through summer and absolutely no filter is needed when it comes to capturing them on camera.

Winter is coming... but on the coast there's no such thing as bad weather, it's just bad clothing! Luckily there are lots of lovely snug seaside fashions to choose from, and the East Coast offers numerous locations for a photoshoot like this one.

Look up, look down, look everywhere around! We stumbled (literally!) upon this little chap whilst moored up at Limehouse Basin in London. Love the colouration and cherry demeanour!
