Halloween is scary enough without your marketing disappearing into the shadows! 👻

The spooky season gives brands the perfect excuse to get creative, but the best Halloween campaigns aren’t just about dressing up your usual marketing in a pumpkin costume, they have a strategy behind them.

Here are three things to keep in mind when planning yours 👇

→ Think beyond the obvious: Certain Halloween related words can cause problems for paid platforms, so get creative with your copy. Puns, playful language & lighter spooky themes can keep the Halloween feel without setting off the filters.

→ Make them feel something: The campaigns that stick aren’t necessarily the ones shouting about their products. They tap into nostalgia, humour, curiosity or a little bit of fear, so give people a reason to remember you.

→ Give people something to share: Costumes, decorations, makeup, recipes… Halloween is basically built for UGC. Make it easy for your audience to get involved, create something of their own & share it.

Remember, the best seasonal marketing doesn’t just join in with the conversation. It gives people a reason to be part of it!

Blind boxes are nothing new, but Marks and Spencer have yet again tapped into something bigger with its new Percy Pig collectibles 🐷

The strategy here is pretty clever, to take a format that’s already hugely popular, add an iconic character people already know & love, then give people a reason to collect, share & talk about it.

With seven different Percy characters & one elusive Secret Percy, social content went wild following the launch. Unboxing videos, reveals, reactions, people comparing their Percys… customers have effectively become part of the campaign, creating the content themselves & giving everyone else a reason to want in.

The launch sold out in less than a week, showing just how powerful it can be when brands understand a cultural trend rather than simply jumping on it. M&S didn’t need to invent a new behaviour. It took something people were already excited about, connected it to a much-loved brand asset & created an experience people wanted to share.

& that’s the bit worth paying attention to. The best trend-led marketing doesn’t just copy what’s popular. It asks: how can we make this feel like us?

SEO might get people to your website but good words give them a reason to stay.

At a time when AI can produce a blog post in seconds, we think it’s worth remembering that good content still needs humans behind it.

Our SEO, content & copywriting work is delivered by talented freelance specialists from our network. People who know how to research, write, edit, optimise & most importantly, think.

SEO isn’t about stuffing keywords into a blog post & hoping Google takes notice. It’s understanding what your audience is searching for, what they actually want to know, how your website should be structured & how to create content that is useful enough for someone to stick around. It might mean refreshing old website copy, creating a new content strategy, writing blogs, improving landing pages, developing website copy or finding the opportunities your competitors have missed.

Every project starts with understanding the business behind the words. What do you actually want to be known for? Who are you trying to reach? What makes you different? What do your customers care about? How should your brand sound?

Then we bring in the right freelancers to make it happen. No generic AI-generated content. No keyword stuffing. No copy that could belong to any business in your industry. Just smart strategy, brilliant writing & SEO with a purpose.

AI can easily give you words but it takes human expertise to know which ones are worth using. Need support with your content? Let’s talk: [email protected]

What does Fable & Verse actually do? 👀

We’re a full service freelance marketing agency, which means we can plug into your business whenever & wherever you need us.

Strategy? Yep.

Content? Absolutely.

SEO? Of course.

Websites, UX, email, video, PR, AI optimisation, organic social? Yep, yep & yep.

But we thought we’d shine a spotlight on one of our biggest strengths, paid campaigns across social media & Google👇

Paid media is our bread & butter, but we don’t believe in simply pressing boost & hoping for the best. We build campaigns from the ground up, from the big idea & messaging through to the copy, creative, graphics, video, targeting & implementation.

Then we keep a very close eye on what happens next. We’re constantly optimising budgets, audiences, creative, engagement & remarketing activity in real time, making sure your campaigns are working as hard as they possibly can. & we’re not tied to one platform either. We work across Meta, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Reddit, Google & more, choosing the channels that actually make sense for your audience & your objectives.

We understand that paid media works best when it’s not treated as a standalone tactic. The creative needs to be right, the message needs to land, the audience needs to be understood, the landing page needs to do its job & the numbers need to stack up.

Got a campaign in mind, but not sure where to start? Or already running paid activity that isn’t delivering what you need? Drop us a message at [email protected], we’d love to talk through what you’re trying to achieve & see how we can help.

Marks and Spencer has been having quite the run on social, but Kathryn Turner might be their smartest move yet 👀

M&S has absolutely nailed the art of creating products people want to talk about with their viral food launches, sold-out products, queues around the block & campaigns that feel much more culturally relevant than traditional supermarket marketing. But now they’ve taken things a step further by putting a human face at the centre of the brand.

If you’ve been scrolling on TikTok or Instagram over the past few months then you may have come across Kathryn Turner, M&S Food’s Director of Product Development. Since appearing on social in May, she’s gone from virtually no audience to more than 130,000 followers on TikTok & over 95,000 on Instagram.

The really interesting part is that her content is significantly outperforming the official M&S Food channels. So what’s making the difference?

Kathryn isn’t trying to sound like a brand. Her content takes people behind the scenes, from foodhall walkarounds & farm visits to the stories behind the products she helps bring to shelves. It gives audiences access to the person behind the products rather than another polished piece of branded content.

& there’s another part of this story that we think is particularly interesting. Brandon Spatcher & Francesca Byrne have been instrumental in driving Kathryn’s growth across social, & neither of them actually work in marketing! Kathryn credits the pair with bringing “fresh ideas, honest feedback & plenty of encouragement” to her social content, proving that great ideas don’t always come from the marketing department. As she put it, sometimes it’s about “listening to the brilliant 20-somethings in your team.”

It’s a brilliant example of what can happen when businesses stop treating employee-led content as an afterthought & actually give people the support to make it work, because your employees already have something your brand account can spend years trying to manufacture: expertise, personality & a human perspective.

We often talk about making brands more authentic, but authenticity doesn’t always mean making your corporate account sound more conversational. Sometimes, it means letting the people who actually know the business tell the story. So, perhaps the question businesses should be asking isn't “How do we make our social media more human?” It’s “Who are the humans already working here that our audience would actually want to hear from?” & M&S seems to have found its answer.

We're curious how many other businesses have a Kathryn sitting somewhere in their team…

Christmas might feel a long way off, but if you’re a business owner, it’s already time to start thinking about it! 🎄

We know it feels early. You're still enjoying summer, but the brands that perform well during the festive period aren’t usually the ones scrambling to pull a campaign together in November. They’re the ones using the months beforehand to get their strategy, creative & audiences ready.

Christmas marketing isn’t simply about spending more on ads when everyone is ready to buy. It’s about building familiarity beforehand, so that when people are ready to spend, your brand is already somewhere in their consideration set. & that takes time. Your audience needs to discover you, engage with your content & build trust. Your creative needs time too, whether that’s developing campaign ideas, organising photography, producing video, creating assets or testing different messages.

A simple timeline we’d recommend following is👇

→ September: Finalise your campaign ideas, map out your content, organise creative & start warming up your audience.

→ October: Get your key campaigns live, build awareness & test what’s working before the busiest period.

→ November/December: Increase spend behind the campaigns that are performing, retarget engaged audiences & make it as easy as possible for people to buy, book or visit.

The biggest mistake we see businesses make is waiting until they’re ready to sell. By then, your customers may already have decided where they’re shopping, what they’re buying & who they’re booking with. The earlier you start the conversation, the more familiar your brand can be when it matters most.

Say it with us... great logo doesn’t automatically make a great brand 📣

In fact, you can have beautiful branding & still have absolutely no idea what your brand is trying to say. That’s because branding & brand strategy aren’t the same thing, & understanding the difference matters.

Brand strategy is the thinking. It’s your purpose, audience, positioning & values. It’s understanding who you are, who you’re for & what you want to be known for.

While branding is the expression. It’s your visual identity, messaging & tone of voice. It’s how that strategy comes to life across your website, social media, marketing materials & every other customer touchpoint.

& you need both.

We help businesses bring the two together to create brands that are clear, consistent & actually feel like them. We start by digging into your business, your audience & what makes you different. From there, we can shape the strategy, develop the visual identity & find a tone of voice you can confidently own.

& because we don’t work like a traditional in-house agency, we can bring the right people from our network into the project depending on what you actually need. No cookie-cutter approach, just the right mix of strategy & creative expertise for your brand.

Together, brand strategy & branding form the backbone of effective brand development. Both are equally important if you want to build a brand that works, rather than one that simply looks nice. If you’re struggling to get started drop us a line at [email protected]

KFC are opening a w**e bar. Yes, you read that right 🍗🍷

KFC has teamed up with La Vieille Ferme, better known to many as “Chicken Wine”, for Coq au Vin, a four-day pop-up in Shoreditch over the August Bank Holiday.

The concept is exactly what you’d expect from the name: KFC’s iconic fried chicken paired with La Vieille Ferme w**es, from sparkling rosé with Popcorn Chicken to red with Hot Wings & rosé or white with Original Recipe Tenders.

It’s a playful partnership, but there’s actually some smart brand thinking behind it. KFC hasn’t tried to become something it isn’t. It’s taken two brands with a natural connection, leaned into the shared chicken reference & turned it into something fans can actually experience. It’s another good example of how brands can create attention by taking something familiar & giving it a completely unexpected spin.
