September can still bring warm, almost summery days, but the light begins to soften and turn golden. Afternoons feel more precious, evenings draw in, and spectacular sunsets remind us to make the most of every last drop of daylight.

And then, as reliably as autumn itself, the pigs appear in the Forest for pannage — one of those wonderfully distinctive New Forest traditions that makes this time of year feel so special.

September is Write a Will Month, and local people have an opportunity to support Oakhaven Hospice while putting an important document in place.

A number of local solicitors and will writers are waiving their usual fees during September and instead inviting clients to make a donation to Oakhaven Hospice.

The hospice has also joined 126 others across the country in the national ‘This is Hospice Care’ campaign, airing between 14 and 30 September. The campaign shares real stories of how hospices support people and families through some of life’s toughest moments, while highlighting the difference that gifts left in wills can make.

For Oakhaven, those gifts are hugely important. They currently help cover the cost of care for one in four patients and play a vital role in helping the hospice continue supporting more local families each year.

Leaving a gift in a will does not mean giving money today, and gifts of any size can make a meaningful difference.

What an inspiring visitor to Lymington 💜

Residents, families and staff at Linden House recently welcomed Dr Judy Benjamin, who is currently taking on an extraordinary 550-mile walk from Land’s End to London to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s and encourage conversations around brain health.

Now in her 80s, Judy was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at 67, after previously watching her mother live with the disease for 20 years.

During her visit to Linden House, Judy shared her own experiences, spoke about the lifestyle changes she has made since her diagnosis and, importantly, shared a message of hope with residents and their families.

And this isn’t her first epic challenge. Judy has previously walked an incredible 2,790 miles across the USA!

After some very well-earned tea and cake at Linden House, she was back on her way towards London.

A remarkable woman, an incredible challenge and an important conversation to keep going.

We wish Judy all the very best for the rest of her journey! 👏🥾

There’s plenty happening at The Montagu Arms Hotel in Beaulieu this autumn, with a calendar full of reasons to get together as the evenings draw in 🍂

An evening to celebrate life: 15 years of força 🎉

On Thursday 1 October 2026, força strength against cancer will host a very special evening at Lymington Town Sailing Club to celebrate 15 years of the Lymington-based charity—and, importantly, 15 years of its wonderful inspiration, Carla, fighting and living with cancer.

The evening will begin with drinks from 7pm, followed at around 8pm by an informal wellbeing discussion focused on living life well. The guest panel will explore nutrition, fitness, rehabilitation and much more, with plenty of opportunities for attendees to ask questions and join the conversation.

Tickets are limited and offered on a pay-what-you-can basis. All donations will go directly to força, a volunteer-run charity supporting people living with cancer across Hampshire and Dorset.

How do you secretly prepare for one of the most important military operations in history?

In the months leading up to the Normandy Landings in June 1944, secrecy was paramount. No one was allowed to reconnoitre the Normandy beaches without the express permission of the Prime Minister.

Yet vital information was needed about the beaches where Allied forces would eventually land.

Two highly secretive reconnaissance missions were carried out by the Combined Operations Pilotage Parties (COPP), with swimmers put ashore at Gold Beach on 31 December 1943 and Omaha Beach in January 1944.

On Thursday 10th September, Brigadier Robbie Scott-Bowden MBE (Retired) will be at Gates Hall in Lymington to tell the fascinating story of these two COPP operations.

The talk will also feature remarkable footage filmed in 1993 of Logan Scott-Bowden, one of the swimmers involved, standing on Omaha Beach and describing both the reconnaissance mission and his subsequent pilotage role on D-Day.
