The UK Government's latest report on accessibility in the private sector reinforces that barriers to access remain widespread, especially across digital services in retail, finance, tourism and leisure. But it also highlights a real opportunity.

For organisations willing to lead in this space, inclusive design is a strategic imperative as well as an ethical one... Accessibility is becoming a marker of trust, quality, and brand resilience.

The research, based on responses from over 3,500 people with disabilities, points to persistent challenges across the customer journey. But it also offers some key recommendations to drive change:

- Involve people with disabilities throughout the design and build process
- Create inclusive environments, both physical and digital
- Support teams with training and awareness
- Embed accessibility as a shared responsibility, not a siloed task

At Nexer, we’re helping teams turn intent into action through services including inclusive research, accessibility reviews, training and longer-term strategy.

📄 We’ve summarised the key insights from this report, and what they mean for organisations below.

The UK Government’s new report on accessibility in the private sector highlights something many of us already know… there’s still a lot to do. But for organisations willing to be leaders in this space, this work also presents a real opportunity.

Inclusion isn’t just about policies. It’s about the everyday practices that help people feel safe, valued and able to be themselves at work.

At Nexer, we’ve seen how tools like the Manual of Me can spark honest conversations and help teams build trust, safety, and better collaboration. .

We recently shared our thoughts with The HR Director on what meaningful inclusion looks like in practice. You can read the article via the link in the comments 👇

"I’ve worked in digital design for public services long enough to know that, no matter how good our intentions, new technology often benefits those who are already well-served. AI is no exception. The real opportunity, and the real responsibility, is making sure it doesn’t deepen digital exclusion but instead helps dismantle it.

"There’s no doubt AI can unlock better public services. It can support people with disabilities, simplify complex processes, and create more flexible, inclusive experiences. But that won’t happen by default. It only happens if we’re deliberate, not just about what AI can do, but who it’s doing it for."

💬 Read more from Chris Bush, our Capability Lead for Design at Nexer, in his piece for Digital Leaders: “Why AI must be designed for everyone – AI’s role in accessible public services”

AI is quickly becoming a core part of how public services are delivered. On paper, it sounds like a win as AI has a lot to offer. It can make services smarter, quicker and more responsive. But the risks are just as real. I’ve worked […]

"Being an ally is not about simply nodding along in silence. Allyship means using your seat at the table to stand up for others, and crucially, making space for more chairs. Being an LGBTQIA+ ally has taught me more about myself, and about how representation, self-expression and validation really matters, perhaps now more than ever. Inclusion is a choice and it's up to everyone to make that choice every day.”

All month, we're sharing quotes from the team about what , identity, and allyship means to them. Here's our next lovely one from Jen Kelly. 🏳️‍🌈 🏳️‍⚧️

Clinical and administrative staff working in primary care — we want to hear from you!

On Wednesday 26 June, 14:00–16:00, we’re hosting an in-person event in Macclesfield, led by the 'Writing to patients' project team from The University of Manchester. In this session, we will explore what patient-first clinic letters should look like in general practice.

We’re especially keen to hear from clinical staff who are not GPs, practice managers, and administrative staff / patient advisors.

What you’ll get:
- An £80 flat fee to thank you for your time
-A certificate of attendance
-An opportunity to reflect on practice and feed into national guidance

If you or someone you know works in primary care admin, please:

🌈 Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming A-Level Product Design student Amy to our team for work experience.

Amy joined our design team and worked on a series of social media posts for Pride Month, bringing creativity, thoughtfulness, and care to every part of the process. From initial research and Figma sketches to final designs on our Instagram grid, Amy got stuck in and made a real impact.

You can read her brilliant write-up of the week on our blog 👇 Thanks again, Amy, it was a joy having you on the team!
