Sometimes the landscape is the subject.

Sometimes it is the scale against which everything else is measured.

Four cyclists make their way through the Scottish Highlands, their flashes of colour becoming tiny marks within the vast landscape.

AN ANCIENT WOODLAND IN A MODERN HOME

Wistman’s Wood is a place of twisted branches, moss-covered boulders and trees that seem to have grown into one another over centuries.

In this photograph, it was the colours and textures that caught my attention. The deep greens, the muted autumn tones and the shapes emerging from the woodland.

Presented as a framed photographic print, it brings a little of that atmosphere into a very different setting.

NATURE’S FILTER

The pastel tones in this photograph were not created in post-production.

I was standing in soft, misty rain at the Silver Sands of Morar on the west coast of Scotland. The rain itself was filtering the landscape, softening the distant hills and quietening the colours of the sand, water and grasses.

There was no need to add atmosphere to the photograph.

You just had to see it and be prepared to get wet.

SILVER SANDS OF MORAR

This photograph prints beautifully on Hahnemühle William Turner watercolour paper.

PHOTOGRAPH FROM MY MIND’S EYE

I had been thinking about this photograph for some time before I actually made it.

I knew the two sections of Herne Bay Pier and had already composed the photograph in my mind. But to make it work, several things needed to come together: low tide, a late sun and a clear, bright sky.

One June evening, they did.

I walked out ankle-deep into the estuary mud until I reached the position I had imagined. From there, the remains of the pier became a near-black silhouette, framing the isolated section beyond.

And then, just as I was making the photograph, a gull crossed the open sky.

PIER SILHOUETTE

Sometimes the photograph exists in the mind long before it exists in the camera.

A PHOTOGRAPH IN ITS PLACE

There is a difference between seeing a photograph on a screen and seeing it framed and given its own space on a wall.

Scale changes. The surroundings become part of it. Even the light within a room can alter the way we experience the image.

WHISTABUBBLE is shown here as a framed print in an interior setting. A chance to see the photograph not simply as an image, but as something that might become part of a room.

Available as a framed photographic print from OPENPHOTO ART.

TIME

Last time I showed this photograph framed and placed within a room. Here is the photograph itself.

What first drew me to this scene was the way the architecture seemed to lead in two directions: the staircase rising towards the light, while the sequence of arches draws the eye deeper into the building.

Then there are the surfaces. Faded colour, peeling paint, worn stone and the marks left by years of use.

It was this sense of a place carrying its own history that eventually gave the photograph its title: TIME.

Available as a framed fine art print through OPENPHOTO ART.

When Photographs Need Words

The latest Journal from Chris Page at OPENPAGE STUDIO explores something that sits behind many finished photographs: the words that sometimes accompany them.

Why give a photograph a title? Why write about an image that can already speak for itself? And when can a few carefully chosen words encourage us to look again?

The new Journal is now available to read.

When do photographs need words? Chris Page reflects on titles, notes, photographic books and the role of writing in helping viewers look more deeply at an image.
