Struggling with sales?

The real reason why people buy absolutely anything, isn't why you think.

The amount of people in your audience ready to buy is around 5%, often less.

And most businesses (i.e. your competitors) spend a lot of time in the wrong pool, all fighting for the same business.

So understanding what can motivate people to buy is really important.

Because there are two parts to your market and you need to be fishing in the ocean, not the pool:

1. Active Desire - Those people who know what their problem is and are actively searching for what you do. They're comparing prices, asking for referrals, have a list of brands. They're ready to buy.

2. Dormant Desire - People that know they've got a problem or frustration. They know something isn't right but might not be able to articulate it. They haven't figured out a solution yet or actively looking for one.

Most businesses hang around in Active Desire, but if you hang around in Dormant Desire, you're 10X more likely to get leads.

How?

By shining a light on the tension people are experiencing, so they can have a lightbulb moment.

You need to get people to see where they are now, where they could be and what obstacles are stopping them from taking action.

Use your content to:

🤩Educate, share value and shine a light on where they are

🤩Show them where they could be

🤩Help them articulate the obstacles they're facing

🤩And how you can help them

The more clarity they have on these four areas, the easier it is for them to have the emotional and logical 'click' they need to work with you.

Why your marketing content is putting people off from buying from you…

Imagine your best mate opens a restaurant.

For years, they’ve told you what a great chef they are, but they’ve never actually cooked for you. They could be crap for all you know, but they talk a good game…

You invited to restaurant on the opening night, slightly concerned that you’ve never sampled their food before.

But the pre-orderable menu just tells you what the dishes are.

Parmigiana
Cassoulet
Curry

You’ve got no idea what ingredients are in any of these things, so it makes it really difficult to make a choice.

What if you don’t like it?

It’s pricey, so you decide to make your excuses and give it a miss.

Your marketing & social media content are no different to the chef friend or their menu…

1. You can’t just tell people how good you are, you need to let them sample some of your wares for free (in other words, don’t hide all of your best advice behind a pay wall.)

2. Your menu of products needs to list the ingredients in a mouth-wateringly appealing way, otherwise, how do you expect people to invest?

Why should they eat in your restaurant, when there’s a perfectly good (and cheaper one) down the road…

Well, Ernie keeps knocking his out on the letter box.

But.....

If your customers are churning faster than your knickers on a spin cycle, and your stuff isn't SeLLiNg...

It's very likely not a problem with your package (that's what she said 😉 )

Because the right words do the job.

🤢Not vomit-inducing lie-balls.

Not proper boring prose.

The right words.

So if your web copy feels drier than a shrivelled up chamois leather, let's bring it back to life.

I’ll pull the words out of your head and give your brand more legs than a centipede.

P.S. Centipedes make me feel weird too, but you get the analogy.

Are you spotting the gaps?

Bit of a spontaneous post this evening, coz I get asked about this a lot.

It’s something that as a seasoned marketer, I’ve done a lot with my clients and ex-employers….

Spotting the gaps!

You might be trying reeeeeeally hard to sell your signature offer, and despite your best bloody efforts it’s not working.

So you look at changing your audience, the audience that can afford your thing. (And there’s nothing wrong with that).

But what about your current audience?

They’re in your world for a reason.

Are you asking them what THEY want?

Because you might be missing a massive trick. They want your help, you want to earn money and neither is happening. Which means risking losing your audience to someone else.

I’ve helped recent clients to spot the gaps, and they’ve run with them…

Producing results that range from £13k - £23k launches.

Often the gaps are there…are you mindful of them? Do you need the confidence & knowledge to get out of the uncomfortable zone and just go for it?

Is your marketing too surface-level and beige? Try this!

I talk about this all the time with my clients, and there's no shame, but a lot of marketing I see is barely scratching the surface.

And I don't want that for you...

Your audience are icebergs, they show you the tip of what might be going on for them, but underneath the surface there's a whole mountain of stuff going on. Find their truth - and it will open new doors for you and for them.

• Your content will get more engagement, your audience will grow

• You will be able to create the right products and services for your audience, without second guessing.

• Because people will think 'Wow, this person really gets me - they're in my head."

• You WILL get more sales.

I always say to my clients -

If I was a nutritionist, I wouldn't just be saying "Do you want to lose weight?"

That's the surface level problem, and surface level = too generic.

• I'd be looking at all the different ways the problem could be experienced and talk to them -

• Is going clothes shopping a flustering and shameful experierence as they try to fit into clothes they know are 2 sizes too small?

• Are they ready to go dating for the first time in years, but lack the body confidence to sit in front of someone else?

• Maybe they've got an important event they need to buy new clothing for, but the idea of feeling like a christmas cracker tube wrapped up in silk is filling them with dread?

• Perhaps they're too scared to get undressed in front of their partner?

• Perhaps they've lost so much body confidence, that it's affecting their sleep, the way they feel about themselves, their s*x lives, their relationships.............

This 👆👆sh*t will keep people up at night.

This is the detail you need to be drilling down into.

So if you're serious about getting in front of more people. Create yourself an empathy map, like the one here that Sandra and I use, and start to list out all the reasons why people NEED to work with you.

Split it into 4 quadrants with the four titles, as in our graphic.

I promise if you get the detail, it WILL make all the difference to your business. This needs to be at the heart of everything you do.
