Some places are just places. Until they aren’t.

I’ve carried Joy Division with me for so many years, through so many versions of myself, that standing here felt almost unreal. Like somehow stepping into a photograph that has lived in my head forever.

And yes, I cried. Of course I fu***ng cried.

Because music does that. It attaches itself to memories, people, years, feelings, entire pieces of who you are. And then one day you find yourself standing on a bridge in Manchester and suddenly all of it is right there with you.

This wasn’t sightseeing.
This was personal.

The Science and Industry Museum has unveiled a special Pride programme coinciding with Manchester’s famous celebration of inclusivity this August.

Spanning talks, newly displayed objects (including this portrait of Alan Turing by Baiba Auria) and creative workshops, the Museum’s Pride schedule kicks off today, running through the duration of the festivities until Mon 31 Aug.

I’ve spent a decade trying to convince people that the things I grew up around were worth investing in. And not the glass towers type.

Our ends. Our ways of speaking. The little scran spots where I’ll bump into kids from three different parts of Greater Manchester. The missions down the M60, M61 and M62 that shaped us. The way migration created strips we feel at home on.

The Manchester I know is made from cultures overlapping. Language changing. Traditions travelling. Styles being borrowed, adapted and made our own. And I’ve always known my personal style is a walking result of that.

Being given the opportunity to take all of that and create something with Nike, in Manchester, feels like a full-circle moment.

Putting the North on without having to water it down first.
