An acclaimed artist has hailed Manchester for “achieving something amazing here”, when describing the city’s flagship Aviva Studios.

Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, who has created political sculptures, photographs, and other public works, made the comments as he launched a new exhibition of his work at the venue, which explores themes including global relationships and the consequences of war.

“I’ve never experienced a similar space in my life and that was a challenge, so I studied the history of Manchester, including its role as the world’s first industrial city,” he said.

“I never dreamed I would come to Manchester but this city has openness and ambition when its comes to promoting art and culture. It’s really admirable”

A mathematician, codebreaker, computer scientist and LGBTQ+ pioneer, Turing’s work helped win the Second World War and laid the foundations for the technology many of us use every day.

Despite everything he gave to the world, he was persecuted for being gay and denied the recognition he deserved during his lifetime.

Today, we remember not only his extraordinary achievements, but also the importance of creating a world where people are free to be themselves.

You’ll find our tribute mural to this honorary Manc at the top of the Tib Street stairs, created by local artist 🖤

This exhibition celebrates something you walk over, and past, every day: manholes. These well-trodden yet often overlooked works of art that adorn the streets, roads and pavements of Manchester and beyond.

📖 I’ve Never Read Elizabeth Gaskell | 1st-30th June, Rochdale Central Library
Three young writers - , , and Guruleen Kahlo were each awarded a residency at . Through their eyes, visitors will discover just how much there is to the inspiring world of Elizabeth Gaskell.

📓Elias Canetti | 1st-30th June, Didsbury Library
This exhibition tells the story of Nobel Prize-winning author Elias Canetti. The first volume of his memoirs, which won him the Nobel Prize in 1981, details his formative stint in Manchester. The exhibition brings his story back to where it began.

📸 KFOR and Kosovo | 1st-30th June, Sale Library
Internationally acclaimed Heartstone photojournalist Nick Sidle was embedded with several UK regiments in 2000 to document the human story of life after the 1999 war in Kosova. This exhibition presents a selection of images from the full 100-image photostory.

He’s said it once, and he’ll say it again, Jeff Goldblum loves Manchester 🙌

It’s perhaps quite fair to say that Jeff Goldblum has seen much more of Manchester in the last few months than many of us may have ever expected him to have had in his entire career.

During the BRIT Awards in February, he graced the Co-op Live stage to present the Album of the Year award to Olivia Dean before glamming it up with his fellow A-Listers at the Universal afterparty at The Ivy Spinningfields.

He then returned to the very same Eastlands venue a month later for a surprise appearance during Laufey’s sold-out gig and also met fans at the HMV store in the Arndale to sign copies of his latest album.

And Jeff we love that you love us 🫶
