Well after that emergency alert went off for real across the UK, I am aware that a lot of people may have a phone hidden or concealed at home, especially if they are a victim of domestic abuse. They last thing that they will want is for their ‘secret’ phone to start making a noise and giving away its location. You can switch these alerts off by following the instructions at womensaid.org.uk/uk-emergency-alerts/

Please let others know about this. Even if it doesn’t affect you directly, you may have a friend or follower who could do with this information.

Tonight, many of us received a national emergency alert warning of the very high risk of wildfires across the UK.

We absolutely recognise the importance of these alerts and support having a national way to quickly communicate vital information.

But we also know that, for some people, an unexpected alert sounding on a phone can create a very different kind of risk.
Some people experiencing domestic abuse or living in volatile situations keep a hidden or secondary phone as part of their safety planning. An unexpected sound or vibration from that phone could reveal its existence.

We created a simple guide explaining how emergency alerts work and how they can be managed on a hidden phone for anyone who may be at risk.

Please share it. You may never know who in your network needs this information – and sharing it could help someone stay safe.

Under the Digital Services Act (DSA), platforms accessible to children and teens must ensure a high level of privacy, safety, and security.

Our preliminary findings show that TikTok fails to meet this standard, exposing children and teens to risks including unwanted contact, cyberbullying, or predatory behaviour.

If our preliminary findings are confirmed, TikTok could be issued with a fine of up to 6% of its total global annual turnover.
