What does creative writing mean to me?
When I was a child I used to have a vivid imagination. I used to be able to imagine myself in spaces I have never been to before - and this is pre-internet days because I am a 90’s kid, born at the tail end of post-soviet era in north east of Poland - so trust me, the only influence my imagination might have had are through other people’s stories, and of course books. I never found reading to be the most enjoyable thing as my mind could not focus on the words or it would wonder. But poetry was different, the rhymes and the structure were so easy to digest and reading them was as if I was standing on the side lines watching the poem become the ink on paper. Well, with writing, you see, I can calm all of the thoughts down and make some sense of it all.
As many children, I was given all the tools to create and be creative. But when it came to education, I got lost in needing to memorise facts, dates and figures “as they might come up on the exam” and my brain couldn’t cope with it all. Even writing, once just a hobby, became highly criticised by teachers and tutors. No one was interested in how you felt, just your grades and your whole life became measured by performance and not the way you are.
I only started to write again through journaling three years ago and I am still discovering where the thread is unravelling. Society, education, “the matrix” - thank you for all your advice over the years, but please kindly know that my creative drive did not d*ie away with that little girl who once so confidently recited poetry in competitions. You didn’t win, I did.

I strongly believe that we’re all born creative and when pen is put to paper, or hands to the keyboard, we can write about anything that we’re passionate about.
