I don't post on here so much (busy doing it for other people).

So, a little bit of info about me, and the services I provide.

I'm a qualified journalist (sometime back in the mid-90s) and have worked on local weekly and regional daily papers.

I worked for two PR agencies before going solo about 10 years ago.

I have a varied client list that includes local/national/international companies.

Basically, I spend my time thinking about how to raise the profile of businesses and people to audiences that matter to them.

So, I write press releases, develop case studies, pen social media posts, put together awards submissions, write features, do a lot of copywriting, liaise with media, make relevant connections (it’s not just about press releases).

I also monitor, manage and protect reputations, and proactively look out for opportunities.

I put together campaigns, and I put together one-off press releases.

That's about it. I can’t put shelves up straight or mend cars.

If you need some media and PR support, get in touch.

Great to see a very local venue to me, Carr Bank Wedding Venue, get coverage in local and regional media.

Good press release (of course), but actually a good story.

And, in fact, news.

Press releases should tell a genuine news story.

That’s a secret to getting coverage.

And so nine years ago, I began life as a sole practitioner in PR, media relations, and copywriting.

There have been ups and downs of course, but I have had, and continue to have, some great clients and I work with some great people.

They say you need to love what you do. Well, I love what I do and couldn’t do anything else. As I have said before, I cannot put a shelf up straight or strip a car engine down and rebuild it.

I can’t do what my clients do. But, I can do what I do, earn a few pennies, have a little fun along the way, and meet some great people.

Here’s to the next nine years - and using this page more (plans are in place for that).

(And, as an anniversary present to readers of this status, if you engage me to write press releases, features, product copy, and social media posts, you can jolly well pay me for it. Because I’m worth it, and so are you).

Getting Stuff Done

I shared on Facebook yesterday a link to a Nottinghamshire Live article about supporting local independent businesses.

Made me think; we’re obviously in interesting times and it has been a bloody struggle for many, but there are still a lot of established businesses thinking of innovative ways to survive, and new businesses being set up all the time.

There’s been more collaborative thinking, more agile manoeuvring going on, more partnerships have been forged, and, basically, more people thinking about how best they can get stuff done whether they’re a new set up or an older one.

So, here’s to all the people who are Getting Stuff Doneʷˢ.

Moving Words

It's ironic, but during lockdown, when people couldn't move house, it has been the property sector that for me has worked particularly hard at marketing.

For me, this has meant a couple of new projects to write articles on matters related to the property sector. I've written on subjects such as Stamp Duty, how to help children cope with a move, and why buying might be better than renting.

I've been given titles, word counts, themes and deadlines. And then I've researched and written the articles. Clients are happy. I've done the work and saved them time. Job done.

It just shows you, opportunities can crop up at any time, and around any corner.

Currently working on a new Mandatum PR website. When that's done and ready to share, I'll be posting more on here. That's the plan any way.

A little LinkedIn tip whilst I think about it. If you are going to connect with someone, particularly someone you don't know, say why you want to connect. So many times you get invites to connect from people who quite clearly just wish to sell you things. That's fine, but if I don't know you, or have little interest in what you're selling, then chances are, I won't connect.

So far today, I have posted about divorces, weddings, shoes, printers, hotels, and conference venues. The world of the PR practitioner is a varied one. (And all that after having taken the dog for a walk, made jelly, made jam, done some ironing, done a 30-minute workout and had breakfast. There's no such thing as no time to do anything. You makes your choices).

I love talking to people.

What's more, I really love listening to people.

As a reporter any moons ago, I used to love the human interest stories. I found that if you listened to people talk about themselves and their families and friends, they would tell you all sorts of things.

Some words were relevant to the article I wanted to write, some not so much. Made no difference to them, as it was all important to them.

As someone who writes press releases and manages social media accounts for a number of people and businesses, I find that those listening skills come in really useful.

Not only do you find nuggets of information you can use in social media, but you also get a good idea of what makes people tick, and how they would present themselves - and this is invaluable to the PR practitioner.

It's also useful on social media. Twitter and Facebook can be used to spread your messages, but they can also be vital listening tools too.

So, when you're talking to people, or using social media, don't forget to listen too.
