I’ve written a new blog. Because apparently I had things to say 😂

We talk a LOT about leads in marketing. How many came in, what they cost, whether they were any good…

Me? I want to know what happened next.

Did you call them? Did they answer? Did they book? Did you quote? Did they actually BUY?

Because if they didn’t, I want to know why. Not so I can say “well, the ad worked” and wash my hands of it. I want the whole bloody thing to work.

And sometimes that means looking way beyond the ad.

We used to accept that advertising cost money!

Before social media, businesses paid to get themselves seen.

They bought adverts in newspapers and magazines. They paid for Yellow Pages listings. They printed thousands of leaflets. They sponsored football teams, village events and local shows. They paid for radio adverts, billboards, shop signage and direct mail.

Nobody rang the newspaper and complained that their advert wasn’t being printed for free.

Then social media arrived and, for a while, businesses got access to something quite extraordinary: the ability to build an audience and communicate with thousands of people without paying very much at all.

Somewhere along the way, that became an expectation.

We started to think that because creating a page is free, reaching people through Facebook should be free too.

But Facebook and Instagram ARE advertising platforms. Meta itself says it generates substantially all of its revenue from advertising. Businesses pay Meta to put their products and services in front of its users.

That’s the business model.

And it’s a very big one.

Meta generated approximately $196.2 billion in advertising revenue during 2025.

Businesses wouldn’t collectively spend that sort of money if advertising had no commercial value.

Poor organic reach does not mean nobody uses Facebook anymore. The latest available UK figures put Facebook’s potential advertising audience at around 38.8 million people, including approximately 69.9% of UK adults.

Instagram’s potential UK advertising audience is around 35.5 million, equivalent to approximately 62.6% of UK adults.

Instagram’s potential UK advertising reach also grew by around 9.2% between October 2024 and October 2025.

Across social media more broadly, 80% plus of UK internet users use at least one social platform…

So when somebody tells me:

“Facebook doesn’t work for my business because nobody sees my posts.”

Those are actually two completely different things.

Your customers are very likely still there.

You’re just not necessarily reaching them… because you forgot the price of advertising.
