Our Story

The Natural Workshop was set up in 2013 by Michelle in our garage. Child care was expensive and we needed a way for her to earn a wage whilst still being able to help raise our children. The business grew from strength to strength and in July 2017 we took on our first real business premises. Since then we have expanded and I left my full time job as a Surveyor in May 2018 to work full time as a partner in the business. We work hard to have the right work life balance between running a small business and being there for our children. Since opening our doors, we’ve been committed to providing service of the highest quality, paying particular attention to working efficiently while keeping the lines of communication with our clients clear and concise. We have a fully kitted out workshop and have years of woodworking experience, because of this we are able to give a well rounded approach to your product needs and fully understand how to approach your design ideas.

We work with private individuals, small and big businesses alike and we are happy to accommodate any sized order that you might have, from a single unit all the way up to 1000`s of units being required. Wood glue...what are we using and can you really trust it...?

Having a few issues with my current glue supplier, not the first time, and they didnt seem super interested. So...should we change it up? What do you think?

I get it that 4 weeks is "out of date" but really, thats mad!!

I'd actually like to take on an apprentice...

The problem is, I can't really afford to.

I saw a post this morning about a lad who'd finished his Level 2 in Site Carpentry.

Out of his class of 40, only 3 have gone on to get an apprenticeship.

So where are the other 37 supposed to go?

We hear all the time that we're desperately short of skilled tradespeople, but looking at it from the other side, taking on an apprentice isn't just cheap labour.

Especially in that first year.

You're paying someone while also taking yourself away from paid work to teach them.

Then once they're actually useful, quite rightly, you need to pay them more.

Add in the rising cost of pretty much everything involved in running a business, tax thresholds not moving and customers already struggling with the cost of living...

Where does the extra money come from?

It's not that I don't want an apprentice. I'd quite like one.

I just can't make the numbers work.

And judging by 37 out of that class of 40 not finding one, plus conversations I've had with other small businesses, I'm clearly not the only one.

So for those of you actually running businesses in the trades...

What would need to change for you to take on an apprentice?
