When my wife and I first moved to Margate, the very first day the movers arrived, our new neighbour asked if we’d met “Harry and Grace.” They lived just two doors down and had a little library outside their house.
For some reason, we just assumed they were a sweet old couple…maybe a granny and granddad who loved books. We said no, and honestly, we were more keen to meet some younger people.
About three months later, I bumped into this young woman on the street. She said, “Do you live there?” I said, “Yes.” She said, “I’m Grace.” And I just stared at her, completely confused. Turns out Harry and Grace were not old at all…they were our age.
Then lockdown hit. I was pregnant, my wife had just had back surgery, we had a newborn on the way, and no family nearby. Because of Covid, we couldn’t have anyone around.
And thankfully we were lucky enough to become eachothers bubble.
They quietly becoming the most wonderful friends we could have ever asked for.
Somewhere between our sea swims and survival mode (Covid / newborn/ Nandos was shut. It was awful), our friendship grew into something really special.
One day Harry came to me with an idea to create a print for his poem Wild, about wild swimming (which we were all doing regularly at the time, and which genuinely saved our sanity). We made it together and it’s one of my favourites.
And now, years later, we’ve just released our latest collaboration… Dust.
It’s one of Harry’s most loved poems (read at countless weddings) and it’s about finding your soulmate. It’s tender and wise and very beautiful.
I feel so lucky to get to bring his words to life visually. So here it is. Dust.
