Happy 8/08! 🎛️🥁

I made this animation to commemorate the sounds and visual aesthetic of the Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer - a piece of kit that completely changed how music was produced, arranged and consumed.

The stretched out bass drum, probably the most iconic sound, rumbled dance floors and home systems in the 80s, filling a frequency gap no one knew needed filling. Without that boom, songs felt like they had something missing. Even today, with technology and electronic music production being more advanced than ever, folks still find it glaringly essential to their mixes.

How many of the sounds do you recognise? How many of your favourite songs utilise them?

All samples used here are from the fantastic team at . I tend to use a lot of their vintage drum sounds regularly. They're just so crisp and well recorded, with a great range to choose from.

In terms of a personal update: I have been stacked with client projects recently, working on some really cool stuff I hope to share soon. I was especially glad to get some time to work on this, it felt really nice to make something for myself again!

This was a really fun project. The brilliant team at FIELD put so much time and work into the thinking behind the visual components of this identity. It really is an honour being able to work with these fantastic people!

I was originally going to animate and create sound for every single one of my submissions for this year's . I knew it could be possible, but with balancing a number of other bits and bobs, it just didn't seem viable when considering my own health.

Push yourself, but never too hard. The work isn't that important if it means you're sacrificing your mental health for it. Look at what's achievable, and always take that work/life balance into consideration.

My practice strives to facilitate the creative process, using a fusion of graphic, motion and sound design to seamlessly build from idea, to concept, to full realisation. Through an understanding of the synergy and dynamic relationship between audio/visual elements, I aim to create compelling, immersive experiences that have audiences captured by a world or vision through which you wish to communicate.

For my 2021 showreel, I am focusing on the concept of ‘life in motion’. This acknowledges the continuous change and growth of our experience in this world, while hoping to capture some of its beauty with a considered application of design, movement and sound.

It has been a long haul bringing everything together for this, and I am finally feeling happy with my portfolio and online presentation. Let's go!

That's a wrap on this year's ! It was definitely a challenge to keep up with, but I'm really happy I took part.

Big thanks to for putting this together. There is such a great feeling of unity that comes with each day, not to mention the excitement of seeing what other people come up with. And a huge thank you to all the lovely comments I've received over the past 36 days!

This project was a huge learning curve. I learnt more about my process, as well as how to best apply creative action to the rules and formulas I set myself. I wonder how the 'A' would look now if I were to start again...

I'm thinking of continuing this project in some way. I've already got a few ideas on what I can do, but I think I need to look at something else for a bit!

Got some other bits coming together this week, so stay tuned 👀
