September is when Q4 preparation moves from planning into ex*****on. Stock should be moving, carrier conversations should be done, and the operation should be getting ready to perform.

Here are four things worth checking right now:

1. Inbound processing speed.
Stock arriving into the warehouse needs to be receipted and available promptly. The sooner inbound goods are processed and on the shelf, the more value comes from the planning done over summer.

2. Carrier SLA confirmations.
Volume commitments, cut-off dates, and surcharge schedules for Q4 should be confirmed in writing this month. September gives you time to address any gaps before October arrives.

3. Promotional volume briefings.
Your 3PL needs your Q4 promotional calendar now, including expected volume uplifts by week, any new SKUs, and kitting or bundle requirements. The earlier that lands, the better positioned the operation is when volumes climb.

4.Inventory data accuracy.
Real-time stock visibility becomes more important as volumes grow. September is a good moment to check that SKU setup is accurate and your portal is giving you the information you need to manage through peak confidently.

September is the month when the groundwork laid over summer either holds or shows its gaps. The brands that move through Q4 with the least disruption tend to have those four conversations done before October arrives.

The criteria brands use to choose a 3PL in 2026 looks very different from what mattered three years ago.

The 2025 NTT DATA Third-Party Logistics Study found that 74% of shippers say they would switch 3PL providers based on AI and technology capabilities.

And it makes sense. Real-time inventory visibility, robotics-driven picking, API integration, live client portals. These are baseline expectations now. A 3PL pitching them as differentiators in 2026 is a few years behind.

Here's where it gets interesting, though.

Technology capability is table stakes. What separates a good 3PL from the right one is what sits around the technology. The governance. The account management. The proactive communication, when something goes wrong before you've noticed it yourself.

A WMS that gives you real-time data is only useful if the team behind it is telling you what the data means. Robotics that improve pick accuracy matter. So does what happens when a new SKU lands that the system hasn't seen before.

When you're evaluating a 3PL, ask about the technology stack. Ask to see the client portal. Ask how their WMS connects to Shopify or your ERP.

When your e-commerce business grows, you want your partners to grow with you.

Here are five signs it might be time to reassess whether yours is.

1. SLA drift during peaks.
Performance holds at normal volumes but starts slipping during your biggest trading periods. That's worth a conversation with your 3PL about capacity planning ahead of the next one.

2. You're chasing updates rather than receiving them.
A stretched partner tends to go quiet. If you're regularly the one asking for status updates rather than receiving them proactively, that's a signal worth paying attention to.

3. Strategic input has dropped off.
Your 3PL executes what comes through the door, but isn't contributing to how you plan ahead. A good partner asks about your Q4 volumes in June and flags when something in the operation is affecting your throughput.

4. The same processes from two years ago.
Your business has grown, but the operational setup hasn't changed with it. Every new SKU or sales channel adds complexity to a system that was built for an earlier version of the business.

5. The relationship feels routine.
Account contacts shift around. Response times have slowed. The conversations have become transactional. These things are easy to overlook individually but tend to point in the same direction together.

The 3PL that supports you at £5M and the one that helps you reach £20M are sometimes different partners. It's worth knowing which stage yours is built for.

That's 100,000 people across two sites.

For the supplement and beauty brands whose customers are in that crowd, the week before a bank holiday festival weekend is one of the more interesting stress tests a fulfilment operation faces. A short dispatch window, a spike in Thursday and Friday orders, and a carrier network dealing with elevated volumes across the board.

It's a smaller version of the same pressure peak season creates.

The brands that handle it well tend to have the same things in place: real-time stock visibility, a 3PL with a late cut-off, and carrier relationships that flex when demand moves.

Branded packaging drives repeat purchase, social sharing, and word of mouth in a way paid acquisition struggles to replicate.

Most beauty and supplements founders know this.
The less discussed part is what it takes to execute it reliably at volume.

Custom boxes, seasonal gift kits, bundle assembly, gift-wrapping at scale. These need a 3PL that treats them as core pick-and-pack work, with the same accuracy standards as a standard order.

A few things that test that capability in practice:
1. Seasonal kits involving multiple SKUs assembled under time pressure
2. Gift-wrapping volumes that spike during peak without accuracy dropping
3. Bundle configurations that shift regularly as promotions change

Each of these is manageable at lower volumes. As order numbers grow, the operation needs to be built for it from the ground up, with the right processes, staffing model, and WMS configuration rather than a workaround that holds at steady state and strains when it counts.

The brands getting the most from their packaging strategy tend to be the ones whose fulfilment partner executes it at 10,000 orders a week with the same consistency as 500.

The EU's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation came into effect last week.

For UK beauty and supplements brands shipping into European markets, this is a live operational deadline.

The core requirements now in force:
→ Empty space in e-commerce parcels is capped at 40% of the total package volume
→ Conformity documentation must be prepared and available for all packaging
→ UK brands without a legally established EU entity need a PPWR Authorised Representative in place before packaging can reach the EU market

Most of the conversation around PPWR has involved legal teams, but compliance lands in the warehouse too. Packaging specifications need to be documented by SKU and by destination market, your 3PL needs visibility into which products are shipping into Europe, and the current packaging setup needs to meet the 40% void fill threshold before orders go out the door.

For brands shipping into Europe, the conversation worth having now is with your operations team and your fulfilment partner alongside your legal team.

The UK 3PL market is forecast to reach £22.2bn this year.

The challenge for any brand evaluating 3PL options right now is that most providers can demonstrate competence at a standard volume.

The harder question is which ones have actually been tested at the scale you're heading toward. A 3PL that performs well at 2,000 orders a month operates very differently from one that's been stress-tested at 20,000. The proposal rarely tells you which one you're talking to.

There are plenty of providers to choose from but the harder question is which ones will still be the right fit in two years, when your requirements look nothing like they do today.

That requires asking different questions than most RFP processes ask. Ask about rates and accuracy SLAs. Then ask the question that tells you more: show me how you've handled a client who doubled their volume in 12 months

On 1 July 2026, the EU's €150 duty-free threshold ended.

Six weeks later, the EU's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation came into force on 12 August.

Two significant EU compliance changes in the space of six weeks, both with direct operational implications for UK brands selling into European markets. Customs duty economics on one side, packaging conformity on the other.

We've covered both. This post focuses on the duty change: what it means in practice, how to model the cost impact on your own order data, and what to plan for ahead of the shift to full tariff-based calculation in 2028.

Every sub-€150 parcel shipped from the UK to an EU consumer now carries a flat €3 customs duty per tariff classification. That figure compounds on multi-SKU orders. Two tariff headings mean €6, three means €9. For brands shipping mixed-category orders into Europe, the per-order cost grows faster than the headline rate suggests.

TikTok Shop is now the UK's fourth-largest beauty retailer, with 60% year-on-year growth in 2025.

At peak, beauty products were selling at five units every two seconds on the platform.

A creator with two million followers shares a skincare product on a Tuesday evening. By the end of the week, six weeks of normal volume have moved through the warehouse. That scenario has become a planning assumption for beauty and supplements brands on TikTok Shop, and the fulfilment operation is what determines how it plays out.

When a spike like that arrives, three things are tested at the same time:
→ Pick and pack capacity: built for steady-state volumes, not five times that before noon
→ Inventory visibility: batch reporting tells you what you had, not what you have right now
→ Carrier relationships: set up for predictable volumes, stressed by anything that isn't

The brands that turn viral moments into sustained commercial wins tend to have real-time inventory data, robotic pick infrastructure, and carrier flexibility built in before the spike arrives.

Those are operational decisions.
At this point in the beauty market, they are commercial ones too.
