If you are running or managing a business with your own website and domain name, please check that your domain name is actually registered to (owned) by your business.
We're lucky to often get new clients transferring into us from other web designers, asking us to re-design and upgrade their websites. In the last couple of weeks we've had a couple such clients who have discovered, on coming to us, that their website domain name is actually registered to their previous web designer and that they don't own it and don't have the rights to use it. This has led to all sorts of hassle and cost trying to wrangle the domain name away from the previous web designer.
To be clear, we and most web designers would not operate in this way. A business' domain name is its number 1 online asset and must be registered to the business, not the web designer. However, sadly we still come across this situation of domain names being held hostage quite regularly.
