📊 Northumberland’s Visitor Economy Reaches Record £1.58 Billion

The latest STEAM report highlights a major milestone for Northumberland’s tourism sector, with the visitor economy now valued at £1.58 billion in 2025 - more than doubling in real terms over the past decade.

Visitor numbers have also reached a new high, exceeding 11 million for the first time, reflecting strong and sustained growth across the county.

What’s particularly encouraging is the shift in value:
💷 Higher spend from both day and staying visitors
🏡 Overnight stays generating 66% of total visitor spend
📈 Day visitor spend rising to £43 per visit (+9%)
🛏️ Overnight spend reaching £403 per trip (+23%)

This growth reflects a clear trend towards longer stays, higher value visits, and year-round tourism, with increasing demand in spring and the shoulder seasons helping to strengthen business resilience.

The figures also highlight the ongoing importance of:
🍴 Food and drink, contributing over £540 million annually
🏘️ A growing non-serviced accommodation sector
👥 Nearly 15,000 jobs supported by tourism across the county

With continued focus on product development, sustainability and enhancing the visitor experience, the outlook for Northumberland’s visitor economy remains strong.
