Before you drive away from your next job, do three things.

✅ Take three decent photos.

✅ Before, during and finished.

✅ Ask the customer for a Google review.

The best time is while they're happy with the work you've just completed.

Also, write down any questions they asked you - Because if one customer asked it, another one probably will too. That question could become useful information on your website, Google profile or social media.

Five minutes.

And you've just created material that can help your business online for weeks.

You don't need to become a content creator. Just get better at documenting the work you're already doing.

Save this and try it on your next job.

"I'm busy enough already."

We hear this a lot from good tradespeople. And genuinely, that's great.

Marketing shouldn't always be about trying to cram another ten jobs into an already full week. Sometimes it's about making the business more secure - Because being busy today doesn't guarantee you'll be busy six months from now.

And if work ever does slow down, that's not the ideal moment to discover nobody can find you on Google, your website hasn't been touched for five years and all your enquiries depend on recommendations.

Build that visibility while things are going well. Then it's already there when you need it.

That's a very different way of looking at marketing.

When somebody leaves you a great Google review, the person it helps most might be someone you've never met.

They're sitting at home comparing three heating engineers, or electricians, or builders - They don't know any of them... So they look for little reasons to trust one.

"They turned up when they said they would."

"Left everything tidy."

"Explained exactly what needed doing."

"Really happy with the work."

Those details answer the questions a potential customer has in their head before they've even contacted you. That's why reviews are much more than a star rating. They're previous customers helping your next customer decide.

If you've done a good job this week, ask for the review.

Word of mouth is one of the best ways to build a trade business.

Someone recommends you because you did a good job, that customer tells somebody else and your name gets passed around. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

The problem comes when it's the only way new customers can find you.

Because recommendations aren't something you can control.

Your website, Google presence and reviews give people another route to your business, including people who've never heard your name before.

You don't need to replace word of mouth - You just don't want your whole business depending on it.

Build another way to be found while the diary is already busy.

If you're planning on taking the Bank Holiday off, take it off.

Properly.

The emails can wait. The website will still be there. Google isn't going to punish you because you spent Monday in the pub/garden/traffic on the M6.

One of the reasons we build businesses in the first place is surely to give ourselves a bit more freedom, not to create something we can never get away from.

I've been guilty of forgetting that myself.

So this isn't an SEO tip.

Put the phone down for a bit. Go and do something you actually want to do.

The business will survive until Tuesday.

Have a good Bank Holiday.

You might absolutely love what you do now. But that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll want to be doing it in exactly the same way in 10 years.

Maybe you’ll want to work fewer hours. Get off the tools a bit. Travel more. Spend more time with your family. Build a team around you.

Or maybe, one day, you’ll want to sell.

I’ve built and sold a business myself, and one thing it taught me is that there’s a big difference between creating a job for yourself and building a business that has value beyond you.

And you don’t need to be thinking about selling anytime soon for that to matter.

Your name and reputation. Your reviews. Your website. A reliable way of bringing in new enquiries. Systems that don’t only exist in your head.

All of that makes the business less dependent on you personally.

You might never sell it. You might still be happily running it in 10 or 20 years.

But things change.

And I reckon there’s a lot to be said for building your business now in a way that gives you a few more options later.

If you're away this summer, here's your reminder that you're allowed to actually be away.

Not checking emails over breakfast, not answering enquiries from the beach, not spending half the afternoon thinking about the jobs waiting when you get home.

You've built a business - The whole point surely can't be that it needs you every minute of every day.

A good website can answer questions, show people your work, explain where you cover, tell people how to contact you...And help new customers find you while you're doing absolutely none of those things.

Your business should be able to do some of the work without you: https://www.seobridge.co.uk/websites-for-trades/

Enjoy the holiday. 🌴

Every day you answer the same questions.

- How much does it cost?
- How long will it take?
- Do you cover my area?
- Do you offer emergency call-outs?

Your website should be answering those questions before someone picks up the phone.

That means the people who contact you are better informed, more confident and more likely to become customers.

A good website doesn’t just look professional.

It makes it easier for people to choose you.

If you're a local business, your Google Business Profile is often the first impression a customer gets of you.

- Before they visit your website.
- Before they call.
- Before they ask for a quote.

They'll probably look at your Google reviews, photos, opening hours and the services you offer.

If that information is incomplete, out of date, or you've not had a new review in months, there's a good chance they'll move on to someone else.

The good news is that you don't need to rebuild your website to make an impact. Keeping your Google Business Profile up to date, adding regular photos and encouraging happy customers to leave reviews can make a real difference to how often you're found and how much trust you build.

It's one of the simplest things you can improve, yet it's one of the most overlooked.

I've put together a guide explaining why your Google Business Profile matters and how to get more from it if you'd like to dive a little deeper.

You're on a job - Your website is still working.

You're asleep - Your website is still working.

You're on holiday - Your website is still answering questions and helping people decide whether to contact you.

That's why a good website is one of the best investments a business can make.
