Many of the introverted business owners I work with have already tried to be more consistent on Instagram.

They have experimented with different formats, watched what others in their industry are doing and pushed themselves to show up in ways that did not feel especially comfortable, because the advice said that was what they needed to do.

And when it still felt hard, or did not bring the enquiries they were hoping for, they often concluded that they were the problem.

That is rarely what I find when I actually look at what’s going on.

More often, there is a profile that is not yet making things clear enough, a content focus that hasn’t been connected to what they are actually trying to achieve or an approach to visibility that was borrowed from someone with a very different way of working.

A calmer approach does not mean avoiding visibility completely.

It means finding a way to build visibility that respects your energy and still helps the right people understand what you do.

✨ If you would like a starting point for doing this yourself, comment GUIDE and I will send you my free guide for showing up on Instagram without the fear.

There is something I wish someone had told me in the two years I spent hiding from my own camera. It would have saved me so much fear.

When I started using Instagram for my business, I did everything except show my face. I posted, I wrote captions and I slowly built a small following, all of it from behind the camera because the thought of being seen made me want to close the app.

I had been bullied at school for the way I looked and the way I spoke, and that stayed with me far longer than I expected it to. Sharing a photo of myself meant being looked at and judged all over again, and I was not ready for that.

So I waited. I told myself I would start properly once I felt ready, once I felt confident enough, once I looked the part.

The thing I wish someone had told me is that the confidence was never going to arrive first. I was waiting for a feeling that only ever turns up after you have started, not before.

When I finally shared a photo of myself, I was wearing makeup, and I used a filter, because that was the only way I could press post. And that was completely fine. It was a start, and it was mine.

You do not have to be ready in the way you think you do. You do not have to talk to the camera, or look a certain way, or wait until the fear has gone. You just need a way of showing up that feels safe enough to try, and the rest grows from there.

That is the whole reason Softly Social exists.

If you are an introverted business owner who keeps waiting to feel confident before you show up, follow along. I share calmer, more manageable ways to be visible, the kind I wish I had found years sooner.

👋 Hi, I’m Rebecca, and I help introverted, heart-led business owners show up on Instagram in a way that actually suits them. No posting every day, no talking to camera constantly, no pretending to be someone more outgoing than you are.

I’m an introvert myself. I think before I speak, I do my best work in quiet and I need time on my own to recharge after a busy day. I used to think that meant that social media wasn’t for me. It actually just meant that I was a poor fit for the way most people teach it.

The women I work with are thoughtful, caring and brilliant at what they do.

Usually, they have been told at some point to “just get over it and post.” That advice has never helped anyone. What helps is a calmer approach, built around your energy, that brings in the right people without the hustle.

That is what Softly Social is. Practical, step-by-step, and always meeting you where you are.

Away from work, you’ll find me walking my Maltipoo Benji, taking my two girls to their extracurricular activities or deep in a psychological thriller book I can’t put down. My mornings start quietly, with cacao, a guided meditation and my journal (Benji curled up next to me), before the rest of the house wakes up.

If you’ve been looking for a calmer approach to Instagram, follow along and say hi in the comments so I know you are here.

For some business owners, “just show your face” is not a small piece of advice.

It can sound simple from the outside, especially when it comes from people who already feel comfortable being visible.

But if you have spent years trying not to draw attention to yourself, showing your face online can feel like a much bigger step.

I know that feeling.

I ran an Instagram account for two years before I shared a single photo of myself. At the time, I told myself it was a branding choice. The business was not really about me, so surely I did not need to be visible.

But the real reason was simpler. Being seen felt risky. I had learned, from earlier experiences, that being noticed could lead to being judged, and staying slightly hidden felt safer than finding out whether I was right.

This is why I do not think it helps when introverted business owners are told to simply show their face, speak to camera or get over the discomfort. For some people, those steps are not small. They can feel like opening a door they have spent years keeping closed.

That does not mean those things can never happen. It means the path there needs to be a gentler one.

You do not have to begin with the most exposing thing. A photo, a simple Story, a Reel where you don’t speak - these things matter. Each small step builds something. And often, the thing you were most worried about turns out to be less dangerous than you expected.

Follower count is the easiest thing to see on Instagram. But it is not always the most useful thing to measure.

The more useful questions are:

→ Are you reaching the RIGHT people?

→ Do the people already following you understand enough about what you do to know whether they want to take the next step?

For a lot of introverted business owners, that shift in focus changes how Instagram feels entirely, because you are no longer trying to perform for a crowd. You are just talking to the right people, consistently, in your own voice.

The free Introvert’s Guide to Showing Up on Instagram covers why the standard approach so often fails people like us - and what a different approach can look like in practice.

I used to think I looked so awkward when I watched my Reels back.

I understand now that the awkwardness was not about the camera. I was trying to show up in a way that didn’t actually fit how I work or how I communicate. I was following advice that had not been designed for someone like me, and every time I watched myself trying to follow it, I could see that.

It became easier when I stopped trying to do it the way I had been told to do it and started working out what showing up actually looked like for me.

If you’re trying to figure out how to show up on Instagram, my free Introvert’s Guide to Showing Up on Instagram is a useful place to start. It explains why a lot of the standard advice doesn’t work for introverted business owners and gives you a step-by-step way to approach visibility that starts from where you actually are.

✨ Comment GUIDE and I will send you the link.

But you’ve tried it anyway. You’ve done the trends, used the viral hooks, attempted the 30 day posting challenges and followed the guidance about frequency.

None of it felt right - and you started to wonder whether the problem was you. Perhaps other people just find this easier and you’re not cut out for it.

And that makes sense. Because the advice you were following was written for a different kind of person entirely.

Someone who finds visibility straightforward, who can go live without thinking twice about it, who can post every day without it costing them anything.

It was never going to feel right for you, and that’s not a character flaw you need to overcome. It’s just a mismatch.

Showing up on Instagram in a way that actually works for you doesn’t mean becoming more outgoing or more comfortable with being front and centre. It means starting from a different place, one that begins with what already feels manageable.

The thoughtfulness you bring to your work, the care you put into how you come across, the fact that you mean what you say - those things aren’t in your way. They’re exactly what will make people trust you when your content does reach them.

A post can get a lot of views and still not help the right people understand whether you are the person they need.

This is why I don’t think viral content should be the main goal for most small businesses.

Reach can be useful, of course. But if the content reaching people does not help them understand what you do, who you help, how you work or why your approach is relevant to them, it may not lead to the kind of enquiries you actually want.

For many introverted business owners, this is also where Instagram starts to feel uncomfortable - the advice tends to go in one direction: use trending audio, use this dramatic hook, say something controversial, do this viral trend, post more videos, etc.

None of that is especially helpful if your ideal client lands on your profile and still cannot quite work out what you offer or whether it is for them.

A more useful starting point is often to look at whether your profile does the basics clearly.

→ Can someone understand who you help?
→ Can they see what kind of support you offer?
→ Can they get a sense of the person behind the business?
→ Can they tell what the next step would be if they wanted to find out more?

These things may not feel urgent when everyone is talking about reach and views, but they are often what help the right people stay, read more and get in touch.
