Big traditional web agencies are the Dubai crypto bros of the .com boom 💥

They love to hide behind tech words to rinse you dry.

It’s been an exhausting week (already) watching 2 agencies drain 3 of my clients’ bank accounts for doing the bare minimum.

One agency quoted £800 to create a staging website.

To create one? You press a button. Wait a few minutes. Done.

If you’re unsure whether you’re getting scammed by your current web agency, here are some common issues I see my clients face:

“Staging sites cost £200+ to create.”
↳ They don’t — it’s one button and takes a few minutes.

“SSL certificates cost £X.”
↳ Most of the time, they’re completely free.

You should own and have access to your domain.
↳ Not your agency. If you don’t, that’s a red flag.

“Hosting is £300+/month.”
↳ That’s only justifiable if it includes additional features like support, a dedicated server, or something seriously custom that needs a lot of maintenance.

“You can’t move your website away from us.”
↳ Yes, you can. You paid for it — you own it.

“You need a fully bespoke CMS.”
↳ Most businesses need WordPress.

And my biggest pet peeve?

They do what you ask. No pushback. No strategy. No better solution offered.

A good agency doesn’t just say “yes” — they help you do what works.

If you’re not sure whether you’re losing a lot of money to your web agency, comment your questions below or send me a message.

P.S. Not all big traditional agencies are like this. Some are brilliant. They do things properly, communicate well, and genuinely care.

My local chicken shop advertises better than you… 👀

Most people when it comes to advertising like to play it safe:

- They look at what their competitors are doing
- They look at what ads they’ve been running the longest
- They create ads that are similar

Rinse and repeat.

The only problem is, that your competitors are doing the same.

Meaning, the market is flooded with copies of the same ad.

And your customers get bored.

Want to know the easiest only way to stand out?

Knowing your customer.

Know their:

✅Problems
✅ Dreams
✅ Values
✅ Sources of information
✅ Pop culture references
✅ How they talk
✅ Preferred format of communication

And build a campaign that ticks all these boxes.

In this case, people want a v**e with their chicken.

(who'd have thought?)

Here are 4 places I find inspiration for my ads that AREN’T my competitor's ads:

- Reddit
- Quora
- Social media comments
- Competitor reviews (go for the 2 - 3 star reviews)

“I want to create brand awareness through meta ads”

It's like saying you go to a bottomless brunch for the ‘food’...

We all know why you’re there 👀

And the same goes with meta ads…

Have as many quality leads and sales as possible for the best price.

Last month, I sat down with a hospitality client.

They assumed that because they were a physical business, they could only leverage meta ads for awareness in the cities where they were based.

After a brief chat, some tweaks to their tracking, and a new ad strategy, we created a campaign that had people booking tables at their venues rather than talking about it.

The results so far:

86 tables and booth bookings at £23 per booking.

Plus, they're already seeing the awareness they initially wanted, with over 110+ likes and 50+ comments on their ads.

What are you drinking at bottomless brunch?

Chicken tikka chow mein noodles…

Something a local restaurant sells here in Newcastle.

I mean:

- I love Indian food.
- I love Chinese food.

But the Indian curry chow mein combo seems a little weird, right?

Well, my curiosity and the hangover got the better of me, so I took the plunge…

Now, I would have ignored it if it weren’t for:

- Their social media showcasing the food and the community who love it.
- Their retargeting ads following me everywhere with offers.
- Their website design and messaging squashing any last-minute doubts.

After a few weeks and multiple touchpoints, I finally hit "order."

Turns out the combination is banging.

I've been back three times since…

All because their marketing and website work cohesively together.

Good marketing and a cracking website can’t sell bad products, but it can definitely sell weird ones.

What’s a weird food combination you swear by?

Every guest on Steven Barlett’s podcast is wrong.

They love to tell you…

“University is a waste of time.” “It’s a bad investment”.

😴

It's actually a great time. Without it, I would have never:

- Moved to Newcastle
- Lived in China
- Experienced 3 trebles for a fiver

So enjoy your Glen’s vodka and Super Noodles.

Microsoft Teams and Linkedin will be here when you graduate.

What’s the biggest lesson you learnt from Uni?

- Lack of community

- Terrible customer lifetime value (CLV)

10 things I hate about your website…

(Probably)

1. You talk about yourself
↪ Talk about your customer and their problems.

2. List your services
↪ Talk about solutions and your customer's transformation.

3. Stock photos
↪ Show your face .

4. Loads slow
↪ Shrink image sizes, use a CDN, and implement caching.

5. Style over function
↪ Prioritise the customer journey first. Then add the exciting stuff.

6. You don’t offer a lead magnet
↪ Not everyone’s ready to buy. Offer a freebie like a checklist.

7. Your website lacks personality.
↪ People buy from people. Give your customers something to connect with.

8. Or worse, you’ve used AI either for images, text, or both
↪ It feels soulless 💔

9. Menus within menus within menus
↪ It’s not organised, it’s overwhelming

10. Your website doesn't focus on 1 core goal
↪ Organise your website content to move people to this goal (likely sales)

[read caption] In less than a month, I will be travelling across the world with this man 🌏

This is one of my very good mates, Chris.

The last time I saw him for longer than a week was when we lived together in China, 7 years ago.

(Where this picture of our baby faces and box was taken)

The other time I saw him was when he flew over to Manchester - which he said wasn’t as good as Newcastle.

100% agree.

This time, we’re heading to Japan for 3 weeks to see our mate Paul.

Initially, the thought of leaving Noise Creative for 3 weeks to eat and explore terrified me.

❌ Not spending time on lead generation

❌ Saying no to new projects for almost a whole month

❌ Worried clients would drop me because I wasn’t ‘on call’

It’s the longest I’ve been away from my business for 5 years.

Turns out it’s okay to take a break for more than a weekend.

(who’d have thought?)

✅ All my clients were excited about me going away

✅ Most projects were happy to pause until December

✅ All my ongoing projects are in very safe and skilled hands

It’s a refreshing reminder that your business isn’t going to end.

And you should definitely do what you set it up for in the first place.

Yes, I’ll be checking my emails and picking up work occasionally.

But that’s a given.

The only difference is that I'll be doing it on a bullet train whipping across the Japanese countryside.

And I can't wait.

P.S. What’s in the box?

The best answer in the comments gets a pack of Pokemon cards brought back.
